In the 1930 census, he is the 35 year-old Mathias F Kerbach, lodger, living in Wichita Falls, Texas, with his 36 year-old wife Helen C, also shown as lodger. Mathias is a traveling salesman in the hardware business. He was a veteran of the World War.

In the 1940 census, he and Helen live in a rented residence in Chicago. They had also lived in Chicago in 1935. “Mathis” is a tracer for a WPA project. He earned $605 in 1939.

In the 1940 Minneapolis city directory, she was Mrs. Ada R McGrew, a saleswoman for McGrew Hosiery Shops. She lived at 4157 43rd Avenue S.

She was still Ruth McClary in February of 1965 when Bess died.
