- In the 1910 census, he is living with his widowed mother, Ada M West, age 50, and his four siblings in San Diego.
Merle was an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy at Goat Island in San Francisco at the time of the 1920 census. His occupation was “landsman baker.”
Couldn’t find him in the 1930 census.
In the 1940 census, he and Edna and Richard live in San Diego. His regular occupation was night attendant in some sort of club although at the time of the census he was unemployed. He had earned $120 in 1939. His wife’s normal occupation was waitress in a hotel dining room although she was also unemployed at the time of the census. She had earned $90 in 1939. The house they lived in, 2935 Haller Street, was one that he owned and was worth $3500. Merle had had one year of high school, his wife had an 8th grade education.
A Merle B. West, 2935 Haller in San Diego, was a registered Democrat in the 1942 California voter registration list. However, his wife at the time was Mrs. Edna G. West. Merle’s occupation was “FNR” (probably Naval Reserve).
In the 1950 San Diego city directory, he has no wife listed.
A Merl B. West, with wife Mamie N., was living at 3017 Vancouver Avenue in San Diego according to the 1959 San Diego city directory. He was a custodian for Dana Jr. High.
A Merle Benjamin West died 25 Feb 1989 in San Diego. He was born 30 Jun 1901 in Michigan and his mother’s maiden name was Butler. His SS# was 550-20-9079. The SSDI also shows Merle B. West. His last residence was San Diego 92104 and his SS# was issued in California before 1951.
Services for retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer Merle B. West, 87, of the Kensington-Talmadge District will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow in Greenwood Mortuary. Entombment will be in Greenwood Mausoleum. He died Saturday in a hospital.
Mr. West was born in Michigan and was a resident of the county for 84 years. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a custodian at Lewis Junior High School. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts 3059 and 6874, the Past Commanders Club and the State Employees Association.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Dorothy Casad of San Diego; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
