Edward F. Sverdrup, 81, of Libby, Mont., formerly of North Huntingdon, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, from natural causes. He was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Edward and Marjorie (Schipper) Sverdrup. He grew up and attended school in Buffalo, N.Y., and graduated from Kensington High School with the class of 1947. He attended the University of Buffalo, where he earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Ed then attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he earned his PhD in electrical engineering. After earning his PhD, he entered the Navy and served in the Philippines. He would later go on to teach at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and at his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon. He later worked in the research department for Westinghouse Electric Corp. and acquired several patents for applications and processes he developed. Ed retired in 1988. Prior to his marriage to Nuala A. Fitzgerald on Sept. 6, 1972, Ed was the leader for Explorer Troop 254 in North Huntingdon. He was very influential in building character and leadership qualities in the boys who were members of his troop. Ed also enjoyed restoring old homes, gardening and history. Ed and Nuala spent many hours of work refurbishing the 18th Century home that they lived in located on the original Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Fullerton-Sverdrup House, also known as the Jacktown Inn or Jacksonville Hotel located in Irwin, was a testament to their artistry and love of antiques. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Nuala preceded him in death on June 24, 2011. Survivors include his brother, Larry Sverdrup and wife, Emily, of Libby; a sister, Carol Phillips and husband, Robert, of Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 26, 2011 at the Schnackenberg & Nelson Funeral Home, 422 W. Second St., Libby, Mont.
