    • Candice Soine writes:

Clarence was born 7 December 1897 in Maynard, Minnesota to Christopher and Betsey Soine. Betsey was very special to him and she taught him the 23rd Psalm. Also, Grandma Loe was very dear to him and took the place of his mother when she died. Clarence worked in his father's general store. He got his first suit for his Confirmation. It was handmade in Minneapolis and it cost $12. Clarence went to school through the 11th grade and was a very successful basketball player.

He saved $1800 and went to Concordia in Fargo-Moorhead. After a few months he received a telegram from his father saying that he should come home because he had used Clarence's money to buy a farm in Rolette, North Dakota. Clarence went to Rolette until the harvest and then went to Seattle by train to stay with his uncle, Hans, who was the general manager of BF Goodrich.

In 1924 Clarence went to Petersburg, Alaska, to work at the Trading Union in men's furnishings for four years. He returned to Yakima and became the assistant manager for Sears, and then was transferred to the Sears in Everett, Washington.

In June of 1933 Clarence bought out a bankrupt shoe store in Bellingham that had no woman's sized shoe over 4 1/2. He owned this family store for 50 years and prided himself on having served a large percentage of Whatcom County with proper fitting shoes.

Clarence married Ciceley Heath in 1931 and they had three children and seven grandchildren. Clarence called her Ciceley, Heath. Clarence and Ciceley traveled all over Europe and 'vacationed' in Hawaii many winters. Toward the end of his life, he was very close to being legally blind.

He died 21 December 1985 of complication from septic shock which destroyed a valve in his heart. He recited the 23rd Psalm from memory before he died and went peacefully in the presence of his wife and children.

Clarence was fascinated with his ancestors. He would tell me stories about his family history as he gave me his world famous foot massage. The only flaw in Clarence was that he loved lutefisk.
