Notes |
- Gladys wrote her cousin Mabel a postcard in April of 1917 in which she says that her mother and “the baby” (perhaps Roland) had been sick and in the hospital.
In the 1936 city directory, he lives with his parents at 118 Park Avenue and is a clerk for “G M Hjehn.” In the 1940 city directory, he lives with his mother at 2617 West 3rd and is a clerk for G M Hjelm.
In the 1940 census, he lives with his mother and sister at 2617 West 3rd Street, a rented residence. Roland had two years of high school. Marie had a sixth-grade education. Roland was a grocery salesman for a retail grocery store.
In the 1942 Duluth city directory, he is probably the Roland E Anderson, a clerk for Gust Hjelm, who lives at 2131 West 2nd (the same address as Hugo and Gladys).
In the 1944 city directory, his occupation is “USA” which probably means U.S. Army. He and Melba reside at 917 88th Avenue West (MP). In the 1946 directory, he is a switchman for the Soo Line. He and Melva live at 1023 87th Avenue West (MP). The MP designation probably means Morgan Park, a neighborhood in Duluth.
His residence at the time of his death (and at the time of his father’s death, for which he was the informant for the information on the death certificate) was 1023 87th Avenue West in Duluth. He was the owner/operator of a retail grocery and meat store. He died of a stroke.
His obit was published on p. C3:2 of the July 3, 1982, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune:
Roland Anderson, 66, Morgan Park grocer
Roland E. “Bud” (Melva M.) Anderson, 66, a Morgan Park grocer since 1935, died Friday in St. Mary’s Hospital.
He lived at 1023 87th Ave. W. and owned and operated Anderson’s Shop-Rite Inc. He was born in Proctor and was a longtime resident of Duluth. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge No. 198, Scottish Rite, and AAD Temple of the Shrine.
Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Charles E. of Rochester and Scott W. of Duluth; a sister Florence (Harold) Sievers of Duluth; and two grandsons, Christopher E. and Kevin J. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Filiatrault-Foley Funeral Home, Duluth.
