Theodore (Ted) H. Thoren, 89, of 3 Sandra Place, died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the Cayuga Medical Center. He was born October 31, 1921 in the American Hospital, Paris, France. Son of Yvonne Lasnier from Limoges, France and Carl O. Thoren, a NCO in the United States Field Artillery from Port Alleghany, PA. At the age of 3, Ted's parents divorced and he lived with his grandmother in Alleghany, PA where he attended grammar school. He graduated from Wellsville, NY High School in 1940 where he was a four sport athlete playing baseball, football, basketball and track. He was the sports editor of the high school newspaper and a member of the student council and drama club. From 1938 - 1942 he was a Golden Glove amateur boxer and baseball pitcher for area semi-pro teams. From 1942 - 1946 Ted served in World War II with the Army Air Force as a physical training instructor. He played on the 2nd and 4th Air Force football and baseball teams and was the basketball coach and NCO in charge of physical training at Merced Air Force Base in Merced, CA. Ted graduated from Ithaca College with a BS in 1949 and MS in 1952. He played football and baseball and was freshman football coach in 1947. He received Ithaca College's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. From 1949 - 1952 he was athletic director, line coach, baseball, basketball and track coach at Sayre High School, Sayre, PA. In 1952, Ted began his legendary Hall of Fame coaching career at Cornell University. He served as an assistant coach of both baseball and football before taking over as the head baseball coach in 1962. He retired in 1990 with the most wins of any coach of a single program in Cornell history. He was a member of eight halls of fame, including the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Cornell Athletics Hall of Fame and the Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame. Ted is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne Hughes Thoren; his five children and eleven grandchildren as follows: Tanna (Jack) Clark of Ithaca; Terrence Thoren of Malibu Lake, CA, children, Robert, Ted and William Thoren; Timothy Thoren (Patti) of Plano, TX, children, Kimberly, Heather and Tyler Thoren; Tracy Dodd (Woodson) of Denver, CO, children, Natalie and Ryan Dodd; Tammara Passero of Rochester, children, Brittany, Christopher and Alyssa Passero.
He and his wife and daughter lived in Athens in Bradford County, Pennsylvania, in the 1950 census. He was a high school athletic coach.
