- R. Neil Haugen’s Haugen Family Tree
Alice Lee (Locken) Haugen passed from this life on Aug. 24, 2104 at the age of 86. She was born to Levi and Otomie (Osborne) Locken Aug. 14, 1928 on the Axtel Lease near Ripley, Oklahoma, the fourth of five children. She lived there until the age of eight, when the family moved from Stillwater, Oklahoma to Stayton, Oregon in 1936. A year later the family bought a farm southeast of Turner. She attended Turner Elementary and turner High School (at that time all in the same building) and graduated in 1946 as valedictorian of her class.
In 1946, Alice moved to Salem and began working as a secretary for what was then the State Industrial Accident Commission, now SAIF Corporation, where she rose to the position of executive assistant to the president before retiring in 1992.
Alice and Bob were married at First Methodist Church in Salem, on June 17, 1950. Two children, Jackie and Neil, were born to the couple. They spent all of their married years in and around Salem, most of them on a fruit farm in the Hazel Green area from 1954 to her death. There she was active in the Hazel Green parents' club. Alice was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, which later became Holy Cross Lutheran Church, for 60 years, where she served as Sunday School superintendent, confirmation teacher, choir member and in multiple offices of the women's organization, especially the Altar circle. She served as an officer at the local conference and North Pacific District levels of the American Lutheran Church Women for much of her adult life where she developed many cherished relationships. She was a member of the local Sons of Norway Lodge where she served in various leadership positions and as president, chaired the annual Lutefisk dinner for nine years, and edited the lodge newsletter for 20 years. In her leisure time, Alice enjoyed handcrafts such as sewing, Norwegian hardanger embroidery and rosemal painting. She enjoyed bowling in local leagues for many of her younger years.
Alice is survived by her daughter, Jackie Haugen, son Neil Haugen and his wife Miriam, three grandchildren, Anna, Nels (Dannielle), and Lars Haugen, and two sisters, Patsy Whitfield and Mae Byrd, as well many nieces and nephews.
