Robert "Bob" Lawrence Svien, 94, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Holy Cross Hospital, Mission Hills, CA. He was born March 25, 1921 to Lawrence Svien and Beatrice Babcock in Northfield, MN. Bob graduated in 1939 from Faribault High School, Faribault, MN.
Bob served in the US Navy during WWII as Gunners Mate 1st Class on US destroyer USS John Craig DD-885 and USS Davis DD-395 1940 to 1946. He had patrol duty on destroyers in the American Atlantic, South Pacific, and Europe. Medals he was awarded included: American Defense Medal, European Area Campaign Medal, American Arena Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal. During his service, in November 1944, he married his sweetheart Betty to whom he remained married for 57years, until she passed away in 2012.
Honorably discharged from service in 1946, Bob worked in Texas at a foundry for a year or so, but one thing beckoned him ~ his love of the blue skies. He earned a private pilot's license in 1948, and purchased his first plane. By 1953 he had become a certified aircraft inspector, and in 1968, a commercial pilot. He continued to fly both privately and commercially for many years, and in his later years was a fixture at the Agua Dulce airport in his hometown, Agua Dulce, CA. During this time he studied and received a real estate license. He then studied and received a real estate broker's license, and opened his very own realty company. He also studied and became a licensed cosmetologist, and opened a beauty salon to work next to his wife Betty. He retired in the 1990's and remained very independent and self-reliant right up until his passing.
A member of VFW Post 6885 and the Moose Lodge, always one who made friends easily and never spoke ill of anyone he met, Bob was so dearly loved by all who knew him and so respected by his fellow servicemen. He will always be an inspiration to those who crossed his path and got to know him. We could all hope to be as good a friend, husband, neighbor, serviceman, as Bob was.
"Rest in peace, Bob ~ we will always remember you, we will always miss you, we will always be in your debt for your great sacrifices and contributions that you have made to help insure the freedoms we enjoy every day. Forever and ever we will always love our Bob."
He is survived by his remaining relative, Carol Watson of Idaho.
