    Notes
    • Anna Roselyn Ellingboe Pomerenk, 87, died on Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, at her home in Pullman. Family and friends were by her side. Anna had been in hospice care for several weeks.

Anna was born in Granite Falls, Minn., on July 28, 1927, to Theodore and Josie (Strom) Ellingboe. Anna was the oldest surviving sister to five siblings: Cledith, Joanne, Esther, DeMaris and Tom. When she was a toddler, the family moved from the Midwest to Washington state, farming first in Poulsbo, Wash., and then in Sunnyslope, Wash. The family moved into town, Port Orchard, Wash., when the U.S. entered World War II. Anna graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1946. She went to Minneapolis, Minn., to further her education. She graduated from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1949 and graduated from the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute as a physical therapist in 1952. As a new professional, she worked with polio patients in the Midwest. Anna continued in her physical therapy occupation until she retired in 1986. She continued in her caring vocation all her life.

Anna married Walter Robert Pomerenk on Dec. 10, 1954, in Port Orchard. They made their first home in Vancouver, Wash., where they welcomed Rob in 1957, Julia in 1959 and Bill in 1965. The family lived in Renton, Wash., for a few years and then settled in Longview, Wash. In 1985, a year after her husband's death, Anna moved to Port Orchard to be near her mother. Anna lived in Ellensburg, Wash., and Tacoma, Wash., near family, before moving to Pullman with her daughter in 2003.

Wherever she lived, Anna was active in her church community. In Longview, she coordinated an annual fundraising carnival. In Port Orchard, she launched South Kitsap Family Kitchen, an ecumenical free dinner program. Anna volunteered for a year with N Street Village, in Washington D.C., where she worked with older, formerly homeless women. She made sturdy quilts for Lutheran World Relief and baby quilts for friends and family. Anna designed and sewed beautiful banners for church.

Anna cared for her father, her husband, her mother, and her sister, Esther, during their last years. They preceded her in death, as did her infant, older sister, Jane. During her last weeks, family, friends, and neighbors cared for Anna. Anna's family thanks those who embraced Anna in their care: Trinity Lutheran Church faith community; High Street neighbors; ShopKo pharmacy staff; Pullman Regional Hospital staff; Palouse Medical staff; and Gentiva Hospice staff. Special thanks go to Drs. Bowman, Garcia, Gehab, and Kumar. The heartfelt thanks of a life-long caregiver and her family go to Kim, Patty, and Tracy, and (especially) to Kate.

Anna will be remembered as a woman who valued love, faith, family, feistiness, hospitality and humor.

Anna is survived by her son, Rob, daughter-in-law, Sue, and granddaughter, Taylor, of Bend, Ore.; her son, Bill, of Algona, Wash.; and her daughter, Julia, at home in Pullman. She is also survived by four siblings: Cledith, Joanne, DeMaris, and Tom; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nephews; nieces; other family members; and friends.

At Anna's wish, her cremated remains will be inurned at the gravesite of her husband at Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard. Pastor Kathleen Anderson will lead the graveside service at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. A reception will follow at First Lutheran Community Church in Port Orchard. Pastor Wes Howell will lead Anna's memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman. A reception will follow.
