- Bertha Methum, age 99, a resident a Bethel Home in Viroqua, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at the home where she had been a resident since 2007.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1911, in Viroqua to Hellick and Brita (Tandle) Peterson. Bertha was baptized and confirmed at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. On Dec. 20, 1933, she married Palmer Methum in Viroqua. The couple owned and operated Methum's North Side Grocery for roughly 20 years. Bertha also worked for the Tobacco Warehouse and Viroqua Area Schools in the Food Service Department, where she baked up to 108 loaves a day. She sold her house after 40 years and then moved to Parkview Manor where she was known for her blue glassware. Bertha was a kind and gentle soul, a good cook, good crocheter and most of all, a good friend.
Bertha is survived by a daughter, Marlene Pieterick of La Crescent, Minn.; son, Paul (Diane) Methum of Ft. Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Harlan (Dianne Riley) Wills of Cottage Grove, Marla Hurley of La Crosse, Chad (Trista Reinke) Methum of Minneapolis, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Anthony, Ashley and Alycia Hurley, Jake and Meggie Wills; great-great-grandsons, Eli Hurley and Scott Rood; sister, Mary Mockrud of Viroqua; very good friends, Lois Gardner and Verna Reed; nieces, nephews, other relatives and other friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Palmer Methum; sisters, Anna Genick, Karrina Peterson and Laura Cornwall; brothers, Tim, Art and Harold Peterson; and a son-in-law, Al Pieterick.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Officiating at the service was Pastor Margaret Eiben Hoversten and Pastor Lindsay Paul Jordan with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Roxanne Felde was the organist and Peter Walby was the soloist. Meggie Wills was the cross bearer and casket bearers were Anthony, Ashley and Alycia Hurley and Jake Wills. Visitation was held prior to the service at church. Reetz-Thorson Funeral Home of Viroqua assisted the family with arrangements.
