In the 1900 census, he is John Oftun, living with his family in Jacksonville Twp, Chickasaw County, Iowa. The household consists of John, 33, Betsy, 40, Lizzie, 18, Julie, 11, Engebor, 9, Steina, 7, Mandena L, 6, and Clara A, 1. The last two children had been born in Iowa. John is a carpenter and the family lives in a house, not a farm. All of the birthdates for the Norwegian-born family members (except Lizzie) are off by one year (one year later than actual). The family name is Ofstethun in the 1910 census. They are still in Jacksonville Twp and have added two sons. Lizzie and Julie aren’t listed with the family.
