      In the 1940 census, he and Luella were servants for the Lawrence Dudley family of Kenilworth, Illinois.

      Earl L. Berg

      IOLA -- Earl L. Berg, 96, of Arpin, formerly of Iola and Manawa, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Bethel Living Center in Arpin.

      Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Northland Lutheran Church, Iola. The Rev. Daniel Somers will officiate. Burial will be in Northland Lutheran Cemetery.

      Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

      Voie Funeral Home of Iola is assisting the family with arrangements.

      Earl was born March 17, 1910, in the town of Iola, a son of Oscar and Mable (Johnson) Berg. He married Luella Merde on Sept. 2, 1939, at the Northland Parsonage. They had been married for 65 years before she died Feb. 4, 2005.

      He had worked as a chauffeur in Evanston and Kenilworth, Ill., for three years. He also had driven truck for the Nelsonville Creamery for three years. Then he farmed, along with his wife, and did some logging until their retirement in 1970. During their marriage they had lived in New Hope, Chicago, Rosholt, Iola, Manawa and Marshfield. He enjoyed polka music and bird watching.

      Surviving are his son, Donald (Dorothy) Berg of Pittsville; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, Kurtis (Tanya) Berg and their son, Erik, of White Bear Township, Minn.; Scott (Lisa) Berg and their children, Jenna, Scott Jr. and Jessica, of Marshfield; Jennifer (Scott) Koran and their children, McKensey, Brandon, Emilie and Payton, of Marshfield; and Kristofer (Tammy) Berg and their children, Hannah and Tessa, of Marshfield.

      In addition to his wife, Earl was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leslie Berg.
