Olaf C. Soine, 89, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota-Crookston School of Soils and Agronomy and a former mayor of Crookston, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Friday at the Presbyterian Home in Arden Hills.

Soine, of Falcon Heights, was born in Maynard, Minn. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. Olaf College in Northfield

and master's and doctorate degrees in soils and agronomy from the University of Minnesota.

He was a professor and soils scientist at the Crookston campus from 1942 until he retired in 1974. He specialized in crop rotation and the effects of soil fertilizers on sugar beets, sunflower seeds and other crops, said his son, Richard, of New Orleans.

"He became interested in this area because he grew up on a family farm," Richard Soine said.

Soine moved to the Twin Cities after he retired. His son said he recalled his father's former boss telling him that he was the "type of person who always got the job done."

In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Dora; two daughters, Kathleen McGee, of Salem, Ore., and Barbara Whitmore, of Minneapolis; a brother, Glenn, of Fridley; and two sisters, Lou Ella Nelson, of Apple Valley, and Thelma Ross, of Hopkins.

21156 St. Olaf, ‘35. M. Div Th, Luther Seminary, ‘39.

From the St. Olaf Alumni magazine, Spring, 1955:

That Jennings Feroe, '35, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mankato, Minnesota, cannot escape his St. Olaf friends was very evident at an evening of appreciation given him by his congregation at the Mankato high school auditorium on Sunday, April 17.

The ceremonies, patterned on the telecast "This is Your Life" honored him for his ten years of service in Mankato.

Waldo S. Johnson, '51, seminarian, was master of ceremonies. Pastor Feroe identified his mother's voice on a recording. Then from behind the scenes came, not just voices, but live "Oles", personalities woven closely into Feroe's past and present life. He had a perfect rating on identification of voices. His wife (Elaine Hjortland) and her parents, Pastor and Mrs. E. S. Hjortland (Mildred Ellingboe) revealed themselves first. Following these were his brother and wife, Pastor and Mrs. Arthur Feroe (Lucille Johnson) of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Pastor and Mrs. Alf Romstad (Olga Mostrom) (Alf was his St. Olaf roommate) and Pastor Fredric Norstad (his seminary roommate) were on hand to remind him of a few past events. Pastor and Mrs. Carroll Hinderlie (Mary Aasgaard) came from behind the scenes to remind him of some breathless days and nights in Norway when the three of them were fleeing from the Germans. John Quam, seminarian and former interne at Bethlehem Lutheran, and Dr. E. C. Reinertson completed the roster of "Oles" on the program.

Pastor Feroe received a gift of an around the world ticket from his congregation. He will go on a tour of the mission fields of the ELC. His church supports seven missionaries.

He was a visitation pastor for St. John’s in Northfield in the mid-1990s.

Feroe, Rev. Jennings age 96 of Northfield, passed away Sunday 11/22/09. 21159 St. Olaf, ‘40. JOHNSON, Irene Lucille (I8842)

21160 St. Olaf, ‘43.

She lived in Milwaukee at the time of her marriage to Feroe. That is contradicted by an article in the Star on December 24, 1944, which announced the couple’s engagement. In that article, she is said to “make her home with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J. L Ellingboe, Richfield station.”

In a family history of her grandparents: “In 1973 a granddaughter of John’s, Elaine Hjortland Feroe and her family moved to Northfield where she is on the staff of St. John’s Lutheran Church.”

She lived in Northfield at the time of her son Mark’s death.

Elaine June Feroe, age 100 of Northfield,

Elaine died on November 10, 2022 at the Northfield Care Center.

She was born April 6, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to Elmer S. and Mildred Hjortland. Elaine spent her early years in Eau Claire and Milwaukee WI, where her father served as a Lutheran pastor. She attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1943 in Speech Communications. She met her husband, Pastor Jennings Feroe in 1943 while playing ping pong at Lake Geneva Bible Camp, where Jennings had brought members of his congregation from Long Lake, IL.

They were married on January 21, 1945 in Milwaukee. After the end of WWII they moved to Mankato, MN where Jennings accepted a call to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. After 28 years of shared ministry in Mankato, they moved to Northfield, MN when Jennings took a job in the Development Office at St. Olaf College. During her years in Northfield, Elaine worked at St. Olaf College and St. John’s Lutheran Church. A competitive spirit, she enjoyed golfing for many years and played bridge into her 90’s. She was known for her generous gift giving, delivering a humorous speech, and getting things done-whether in the family, as a pastor’s wife or in various leadership roles over her lifetime.

She and Jennings moved to the Northfield Retirement Center in 2002 and enjoyed being active members of this special community. The family wishes to thank the NRC staff and her friends for their support and care over the many years.
