20571 The name is also spelled MacFarland in many references.

His death notice said that he was “in his 70th year” which suggests he was born in 1866.

In the 1910 census, he was a 42 year-old master mariner living with Jennie in Boston.

An article in the September 13, 1916, edition of the Boston Globe recounts the “second builders trial” of the excursion steamer Mary Chilton. Captain Elmer E McFarland was in command during the trial. The apparent owner-to-be was the Nantucket Beach Steamboat Company.

An article in the August 10, 1932, edition of the Greenfield (Massachusetts) Daily Recorder-Gazette recounts the collision of the excursion steamer Allerton, bound from Nantucket to Boston, and the fishing boat Santa Padre. The Allerton was captained by Elmer McFarland. The two ships collided in the narrows off Lovell’s island shortly before midnight. No one died, all were rescued. There was some question about whether or not the fishing boat, a 40 foot flounder boat, had its running lights too dim. McFarland said that he ordered the engines reversed and swung his wheel as soon as he saw the fisherman.

In his obit, in which his age is 70, he is described as master of the steamer Allerton, commodore of the Nantucket-Boston Steamship Line.
