An article in the August 10, 1932, edition of the Greenfield (Massachusetts) Daily Recorder-Gazette recounts the collision of the excursion steamer Allerton, bound from Nantucket to Boston, and the fishing boat Santa Padre. The Allerton was captained by Elmer McFarland. The two ships collided in the narrows off Lovell’s island shortly before midnight. No one died, all were rescued. There was some question about whether or not the fishing boat, a 40 foot flounder boat, had its running lights too dim. McFarland said that he ordered the engines reversed and swung his wheel as soon as he saw the fisherman.
In his obit, in which his age is 70, he is described as master of the steamer Allerton, commodore of the Nantucket-Boston Steamship Line. | MCFARLAND, Elmer E (I16732)
