Funeral services were conducted at the Vang Lutheran church at 2 p.m. February 21 for Johannes Hendrick Svien, 78-year-old retired farmer, who passed away at his home two miles northeast of here on Sunday morning, February 17. The Rev. Adolph Egge, former pastor of the Dennison Lutheran parish officiated. Interment was at the Vang cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Arthur Ellingboe, Obert Remme, Helmer Estrem, Edwin Estrem, Leonard Komprud and Phillip Hauge.

There was a short service at the home at 1:30. Miss Muriel Thompson sang, "Abide With Me" and at the church sang, "Beyond The Sunset" and "I Know Of A Sleep In Jesus' Arms."

Henry H. Svien, as he was better known, had suffered a stroke on Saturday preceding his death. He had been in poor health for the past three years. He was the son of Hendrick and Johanna Svien, born in Warsaw township, Dec. 25, 1873. He had spent his life farming in the Dennison area. He attended the local school and St. Olaf college and was always a member of the Vang Lutheran church.

He was married November 22, 1910 to Jensins Seltune of Dennison.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Thor (Agnes) Detlie, Inver Grove, Mrs. Lee (Anna) Buchta, Nerstrand, Mrs. Lenard (Helen) Larsen, Dennison; four sons, Hendrick and Alfred, at home, Lt. Jens Svien, Maxwell Air Base, Alabama and M. P. Sever B. Svien of Camp Kilmer, J. N.; one brother, Olaus J. Svien of Dennison. One brother, Sever J. Svien died several years ago. One sister, Mrs. Thomas (Anna) Bakken and one infant son are also dead.

Mr. Svien was a member of the Warsaw town board for about 15 years and a director in the Dennison Cooperative Elevator Co., for about the same time. In addition to the sons from the armed forces who attended the funeral, were Mrs. Fred Peters of Belleville, Illinois; Dr. and Mrs. Hendrick Svien of Rochester.
