She married Stephen Bye as Brit Johannesdatter.

Underwood, July 11 (Special) — Mrs. Stephen Bye, 86, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anton Nelson, Friday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock. Her death was entirely unexpected. She had been up and around until four o'clock in the afternoon, when she suffered a stroke and died within a short time.

It will be 61 years in August since Mrs. Bye came to America. Her marriage to Mr. Bye took place in December of the year of her arrival here. Mr. Bye and his brother, Henry, purchased an 80 acre farm. in Dane Prairie, now known as the Bernhard Larson farm. Four years later they purchased and built a beautiful home in Sverdrup on the north shore of Bass Lake which has been the family home ever since. Mr. Bye died October 4 eight years ago and during the last year Mrs. Bye has been living with her daughter.

They were the parents of seven children, six of whom survive their mother: Josephine of Bothall, Wash; Mrs. Anton Nelson, Aurdal; Henry on the home farm; Alfred and Stephen of Fargo, and Mrs. Henry Nelson of Aurdal. One son, Edward, died 16 years ago.

In the 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses, he was a farmer in Portage Twp, Brown County, South Dakota. In the 1950 census, he and Nora and Sally lived in Hecla in Brown County, South Dakota. He had no occupation.

Fold3 has him as a veteran of World War I.
