In the 1940 census, he was Edwin F Smith, age 52. He and his family lived in South San Francisco in San Mateo County, California. He and “Alda” owned and ran a restaurant. Living with the family was the 85 year-old widow Marie K Smith, born in Germany. Her relationship to the family is not shown but she is probably Frank’s mother. The entire household had lived in that same house, which they rented, in 1935.
