The February 1, 1877 edition of the Manitowoc Tribune notes a real estate transaction for Helge Ellingboe.

Living with his wife Emma and his five children in Gibson at the time of the 1880 census. Also living with them was his son Gilbert and his mother.

The plat book for Manitowoc County showed that his farm was in section 15, Gibson.

In the 1885 state census, there were two Ellingboe households in the town of Gibson, Manitowoc County. In the H. Ellingboe household there were 10 people: 7 born in the U.S. and 3 born in Scandinavia. Of the 10, 7 were male and 3 were female. In the G. Ellingboe household there were 5 people: 3 born in the U.S. and 2 in Scandinavia. Of the 5, 2 were male and 3 were female. (Those 5 were Gulbrand, his sister Randi, and Randi’s 3 children.)

In the 1900 census, he is entered at the bottom of page 12 of 31 in Gibson, District 67. The family appears to have been indexed as Clollinglog. Still living at home at that time were the seven youngest children. The 1900 census showed that Helge owned his farm, free of mortgage.

The Valdris book, the 1920 history and “manual” of the Valdris Samband, lists Helge C Ellingboe of “Mishicot Wis” as a member between 1908 and 1914.

A note in his death record (ELCA church records) says that “at the time of his death he was the only remaining founder of church in Gibson.”

    Notes:

Jim Ellingboe puzzled: What happened to her illegitimate son Niels? Why was she listed in the church book at time of Niel's birth with surname Ellingbøe if she was from Nordland/Lerohl? Was she working on the Ellingbø farm?

She was also shown as Berit Andersdatter Ellingböe on her marriage record in the church book.

Knud's brother Tosten had immigrated in 1849, via Wisconsin, to Decorah, Iowa. That Tosten was the father of Anne Sandness (#4574).

The Thompson (Sandness) family emigrated in 1852 via Quebec. On steamship Atlantic when it sank in Lake Erie. (#44), daughter Ingeborg (#45) and son Thomas (#46). Name on emigration record is Knud Thomassen Vindingstad. (Statsarkivet, Hamar)

Jim Ellingboe says: The Thompson (Sandness) family came from the adjoining {to Vang i Valdres} county of East Slidre. Last year I visited the ruins of the house on the farm Sannes (Sandness) on Windingstad where they lived in before leaving Norway.

Named Knut Sandness in burial record. Knud and Anne are buried in the Jambo Creek Cemetery. There is some confusion regarding the inscription on the gravestone of both Knud and Anne Thompson. "HUSTRUTIL " means "wife of". A separate entry for Anne based on Jambo Creek Church records is mistakenly read as 7 Dec. 1889, whereas it should be 1 Dec. 1889 and the age should be 71, not 78. This is the same as the information on the stone, i.e., not a separate person. Knud is listed in the Jambo Creek Church burial records as "Knud Sandness".

    Birth:
Windingstad. 22 Jun 1829 in Jambo Creek Church burial record.

Knud married Anne Torgeirsdotter STRANDE (TÜF) on 27 Dec 1850 in Øystre Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Housekeeper
    • Baptism: 25 Mar 1821, Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

The farm name Tüf (Tuf, Tuff, Tüv or Tüff) was found in the birth record of her daughter Ingeborg. From Strande, N. Jørstad, Ø. Slidre, Norway. It’s also shown on Anne and Knud’s marriage record (“Tüfseie, Strande”).

According to Ø. Slidre B, Torgeir married Kirsti Andersdotter Rebne. Was this a second marriage?

Anne’s marriage was listed in Øystre Slidre Kirkebok, 1849-1874. Vol 1, p. 171, located at Statsarkivet Hamar. She was listed as Anne Torgersdatter, 22 years of age, daughter of Torger Torgersen. Place of birth was illegible, but included Strande. (But see above.)

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Farmer

    Notes:

According to usual practice, he would have owned the farm, but most likely he wasn't very healthy, because his brother-in-law Pål Kristoffersson took over in 1785. Andris lived at home. His "pension" and that of his mother were received from Pål and the pension agreement was renewed in 1807. He died on the farm as a pauper, supported by the community. It seems that the family lived at Haga, a subfarm under Jøvne for a time ca. 1810, but otherwise they lived at Nordland Sygarden, no 57/1.

Born at Børhus, a husmanns plass under Tørpe I. In the 1801 census she is listed as a servant girl on the Sønderohl farm, 16 years old, unmarried. On p. 66 of Vang B, she is listed as dying in 1832, but on p. 482 she is listed as having died in 1807. In church book, her death is 1807. This conflict in apparent “facts” is unresolved.

The daughter Kirsti, listed in Vang B, p. 66, as having been born in 1810, might be the daughter of her widowed husband's second marriage (?).

  7. 14.  Torgeir Torgeirsen TÜF was born about 1792 (son of Torger Olson WINDINGSTAD and Barbro Knudsdotter JØRSTAD).

    Notes:

In a transcribed list of baptisms from the Slidre church book records, Torger (christened 9 Oct 1791) was the illegitimate son of Torger Olson Windingstad and Barbro Knudsdotter. He was a soldier and she was a "pige".

His father had another illegitimate son name Torgeir in 1800.

In 1795, Barbro married Lars Gullikson Tüf and her son Torger Torgerson must have been raised on the Tüf farm. In the 1801 Census Torger was age 9, living with Lars Gullichsen and his wife Barbroe Knudsdatter in Røens Annex, Slidre, Christians Amt.

It is reasonable to assume that he became the crofter on the plot of land on the farm Tüf, in V. Slidre, that had a crofter's place that was once called Torgersplassen. It is now 84/2 Moen. Torger's son, Knut Torgersson, bought it in 1856 and sold it to Ole Knutsen Robøle (Raabøle) from Øystre Slidre in 1859.

Torgeir married Anne Knudsdotter KAARSTAD on 17 Jan 1819 in Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Anne (daughter of Knud Tollevsen and Anne Iversdatter) was born about 1794 in Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Anne Knudsdotter KAARSTAD was born about 1794 in Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (daughter of Knud Tollevsen and Anne Iversdatter).

    Notes:

Anne Knudsdatters in Slidre’s 1801 census of about the right age (5, 6, or 7 years old):

Anne Knudsdatter, 6, “Et barn til opfostring” living with the 70 year-old Knud Endresen and the 64 year-old Barbro Knudsdatter, a married couple (their only marriage), husmand, on Moe in Slidre.

Anne Knudsdatter, 5, daughter of Knud Tollevsen, 59, and Anne Iversdatter, 50, gbr on Kaarstad in Lommens Annex.

Anne Knudsdatter, 6, daughter of the widow Anne Erichsdatter, 50, a servant on Widste in Røens Annex.

Anne Knusdaotter, 6, daughter of Knud Nielssen, 38, and Marit Tollevsdatter, 39, husmand med plads on Simmelenge Øvre in Røens Annex.
