Single and living at home in Elmo Twp, Otter Tail County, with his mother and brother in the 1930 census. Called Benjamin A in that census.

In the 1935/36 Fergus Falls city directory, as Benney L. Kilde, he and Magna lived at 401 Washington Avenue E. He was a laborer for Premier Brewing Co. In the 1937/38 Fergus Falls city directory, he was the proprietor of Ben Kilde Motor Company of 204 Court Street. He sold Plymouths and Chryslers.

In the 1939/40 Fergus Falls city directory, he and Magna lived at the same address. Their telephone number was 1083J. His business, Ben Kilde Motor Co., now included farm implements and was located at 210-212 Lincoln Avenue.

In the 1941/42 Fergus Falls city directory, Ben and Magna still live at 401 Washington Avenue East. The business, still at 210-212 Lincoln, is described as “Pontiac, Chrysler and Plymouth Sales and Service, Automobile Repairing, Farm Implements.”

In the 1865 Norwegian census as Karstein Engebretssen, age 15, born in Aamot. Confirmed by the Aamot birth register which shows a Carsten Engebretsen born 7 Nov 1850 (and baptized 5 Jan 1851) to Engebret Bergsvensvien (sp?), apparently of Kilde, and Inger Tollefsdatter. Sponsors for the baptized child appear to be Gunder Gudmandsen, Niels Gudmandsen of Kilde, Margrethe Olsdatter of Kilde, and Oliana Gundersdatter of Kilde.

In the 1895 state census, Carsten, Jennie, Emelie, and 78 year-old Berta Olson (perhaps Jennie’s mother?) are living in Effington Twp, Otter Tail County.

Farming in Elmo Twp, Otter Tail County, at the time of the 1900 census. He came to the U.S. in 1882, his wife Jennie in 1885.

In the 1905 state census they are in Elmo Twp. Carsten has been a resident of the state for 20 years but only 7 years and 8 months in the local district. Jennie has been in the state for 18 years, 16 years and 10 months in the local district.

Carsten married Inga G (Jennie) JOHNSON about 1893. Inga (daughter of Johannes JORGENSON and Anna NELSON) was born on 6 May 1872 in Norway; died on 1 Sep 1932 in Otter Tail County, Minnesota; was buried in Gausdal Lutheran Cemetery, Elmo Twp, Otter Tail County, Minnesota. Notes:

One source has her middle name Jorgine. Referred to as Jennie on Joseph’s birth certificate. One source has her last name as Peterson although most of her childrens’ death certificates (except Joseph’s and Annie’s which show Peterson) show Johnson.

In the 1900 census, she had had 4 children, all 4 still living.

According to the 1910 census, she had had 9 children, 8 of whom were still living. She came to this country in 1886.

In the 1920 census she is a widow living in Elmo Twp with her five youngest sons, all single.

The informant for her death certificate was her son John Kilde. She died from apoplexy caused by hypertension.

In the 1865 census, the 53 year old Engebret Bertranssen, a carpenter, and his family reside as lodgers on the Bjørslund farm in Aamot parish.

An Engebret was born to the unmarried Kari Engebretsdatter, and, apparently, a Bertrand Olssen, on 11 November 1813, in Åmot (p. 105, Åmot 1811-1814).

Engebret married Inger Tollefsdatter. Inger was born about 1815 in Elverum, Hedmark, Norway. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
