    Wayne S. Ausen passed away peacefully on September 3, 2013 at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Mr. Ausen served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from the Navy in 1971. He then worked in civil service at North Island. Mr. Ausen was preceded in death by his wife Betty. They had been married 54 years. He is survived by his son Norman, daughter-in-law Valorie, and grand- daughter Amy, all San Diego residents. He is also survived by his brother Glen of Montana, sisters June and Fern of Minnesota and sister Lorraine of Washington State. A military service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

    Mike’s mother was born in Norway.

    Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Polk County, at which time he was already married. He was living in Star Prairie, Wisconsin at the time and said he was a streetcar conductor for the Twin City Street Car Co. in Minneapolis. He was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair.

    He was a farmer in Alden Twp, Polk County, Wisconsin, in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

    In the 1940 census, he and his family lived in Amery in a rented residence (not a farm). Martin worked for the county doing road construction. He had an 8th grade education, his wife had had three years of high school. He made $1300 in 1939. All 8 children were living at home.

    In the 1950 census, he and his family lived in Balsam Lake. Martin worked for the county highway department doing road maintenance. The household consisted of Martin, 55, Gertrude, 50, Wayne, 18, Eugene Norman, 12, Berl Mabry, 21, and Berl’s wife (and Martin and Gertrude’s daughter) Fern, 21. Berl was a clerk in a grocery store, Fern was a stenographer for the county clerk.

(Indexed as “Lean Engler!”) The family consisted of Frank Engles, 32, born in June 1868, Etta, 20, born in January of 1879 or 1880, Helen, 1, born in Aug of 1898, and “Baby,” born in September of 1899. Etta had had two children, both still living. Everyone was born in Wisconsin. Frank’s and Etta’s fathers were born in Germany and their mothers in Pennsylvania. Frank owns the farm that they live on without a mortgage. Frank’s occupation is illegible but it’s not farmer. It may be butcher.

    Shown as Frank R. Engels in the 1910 census (April 18th). At that time, the family lived in Baden Township in Ward County, North Dakota. Frank was a farmer. He owned his farm with a mortgage. The family consisted of Frank R., 40, Etta J., 30, Helen B., 11, Gertrude, 10, August D., 6, and Viva, 4. August and Viva were born in North Dakota. Everyone else was born in Wisconsin. Frank and Etta had been married for 12 years. Etta had had 4 children, all still living. Frank’s and Etta’s fathers were born in Germany.     Her obit said that she and Frank were in North Dakota between 1903 and 1911. Etta was a Methodist. She was a charter member of the Pepin Lakeside Camp 3184 of the Royal Neighbors of America. (This was basically a women’s social organization, that later became a life insurance company targeted towards women.)

    Etta Engels and family were living in Garfield township, Polk County, on January 13, 1920, the day they were visited by the census "enumerator", Hazel Wolf.

    Etta is shown as 41, a widow, and a farmer. She is shown as born in Wisconsin but her father was born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania.

    Children living with her are: Helen, 21, born in Wisconsin, Shirley (occupation:farmer), 16, born in North Dakota, Viva, 14, also born in North Dakota, Dorothy, 6, born in Wisconsin, and Donald, 3, born in Wisconsin. (Gertrude, the oldest, was married and gone by 1920.)

    Donna says: “Etta was a young widow..You know that she lived near my grandparents and she and grandma Marta were friends. Etta was mom's Bible School teacher and taught at her house. Poor Etta had to raise kids alone and keep that farm going which she did.”

    Etta and Dorothy and Donald lived in Garfield Twp, Polk County, in the 1940 census. Etta owned her house, the same house everyone lived in in 1935. The property’s value was $1500. They also had a school teacher living with them as a lodger.

    Etta was a half-first cousin of the North Dakota senator Milton R. Young.

    His son William’s obit referred to August’s farm as “on Big Hill.”

    In the 1895 state census, he is August Engel. His household consists of 6 males and 2 females, 7 of whom were born in the U.S. and 1 in Germany. This suggests that Sarah may have died by 1895 and that one of the girls was not living at home.

    According to the 1900 census he came to the U.S. in 1854.

    August Engel, 63, retired farmer, and Anna, 49, are living in the village of Pepin at the time of the 1905 state census.

    In the 1910 census, he lives in Pepin County. Living with him are the widow Lousia Anderson, housekeeper, age 24, and her two children, Vernon H., 2, and Elma E., eight months. (She may be the Mrs. Lucy Anderson who was a witness to August’s will. She later filed a claim against the estate and was awarded $600.)

    The probate of his estate was initiated by his son William, as executor, in March of 1916. That proceeding was completed on 25 March 1918 in Pepin.

    August’s real estate at the time of his death was described in the probate documents as follows:

    Eliza Young was a 32 year-old new widow, and pregnant, heading up her household in Pepin in the 1880 census. She and her family lived a few houses away from, and very near, the August Engel family. Living with her were her children Mary E., 14, Albert C., 11, Caroline S., 9, Anna R., 7, Frederick W., 5, Clara B., 3, and Julietta 1. Also living with her were her step-sons George Young, 19, and John Young, 18. The father of all of her children and step-children was born in Bremen. The mother of John and George was also born in Bremen.

    In the 1900 census, she and Frank and family are living in Wabasha. She is shown to have had 15 children, 12 still living. Living with her and Frank are Etta, 16, James, 13, Jessie, 12, Archie, 11, and Cathy, 7.

    In the 1910 census, she is shown to have had 15 children, 12 still living. Archie and Kate are still living at home.

    By September of 1918, she was living with her son James in Chisholm.

    In the 1920 census, she was living with her son James and his wife in Chisholm, Minnesota.

    It seems likely that Eliza is buried at Oakwood Cemetery. However, Find A Grave’s listing of the burials in that cemetery do not include her.
