Shown as Thron in the 1900 census.

In the 1910 census, as Thomas H. Ellingboe, he is a hired man on the Halverson farm in Eidsvold Twp, Bottineau County, North Dakota.

Shown as Thomas H. on his death certificate.

His mother’s maiden name is shown as Sparstad on his death certificate.

Registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Montevideo as Thomas Henry Ellingboe, of Maynard, born March 27, 1882. He is employed as a carpenter by the Great Northern Railway. He lists his nearest relative as Marit Ellingboe of Maynard. He is tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1920 census, Thomas is living with his mother and sisters in the village of Maynard. He is a laborer who works out.

In the 1930 census, Thomas Ellingboe, 48, single, Mary H. Ellingboe, 82, “mother”, and Mary Ellingboe, 44, single and “daughter”, are living in the village of Maynard in Chippewa County, Minnesota. The older Mary is a widow and was first married at age 24 and came to this country in 1866. The younger Mary has no occupation; Thomas is a truck driver for a gas company. Living with the family as a “lodger” is 23 year-old Charlotte Mostrom, a school teacher born in Iowa.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife and daughter lived in Maynard with his sister Mary in the same house in which they all had lived in 1935. Thomas was a WPA laborer for a sewer disposal project. He had an eighth-grade education, Rose had a sixth-grade education.

The Dalby database incorrectly claims his spouse was Grace Thorson. (She is the wife of Thomas Oscar Ellingboe.)

His death certificate, for which Walter Ellingboe of Maynard was the informant, says, incorrectly, that Thomas never married. He died from a heart arhythmia and from gangrene of his extremities.

According to Joann, who remembers Thomas at the Odd Fellows Home, Thomas had been a “rubber man” in the circus. He had many tattoos, was very thin, and had few, if any, visitors.

His brief obit in the Northfield News, via the Dalby Database:

Ellingboe Thomas Jul/1978 Thomas Ellingboe, 96, died Sunday, July 16, at the Minnesota Odd Fellows Home in Northfield. Services will be held Tuesday, July 18 at 2 p.m. at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield. The Rev. S. L. Almlie will officiate. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, one hour prior to services. He is survived by two sisters, Thea Ellingboe of Northfield and Mary Ellingboe of Minneapolis.

He died in Granite Falls between November of 1893 and June 7, 1900. A history of Chippewa and Lac qui Parle Counties says that he died in 1896.

In the 1885 state census, he and his family live in Granite Falls. The children listed are Cristina, Thomas, and Mary.

He is probably the Henry Thompson, 29, living with his wife Mary, 31, and daughter Christina, 8, in Granite Falls Twp, Chippewa County, Minnesota, in the 1880 census.

He is also probably the person referred to in the Dalby database on southern Minnesota deaths and cemeteries: “Ellingboe, Henry T., b. 1850, d. 1895, resident of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota burial site unknown.”

According to the History of Renville County, Helge Ellingboe settled in the area (”just over the line in Granite Falls township”) in 1870.

Helge married Marit (Mary) Torsteinsdatter SPARSTAD on 14 Oct 1870 in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Notes:

    Born in Sparstad 61/1.

Came to this country in 1866 according to the entry for her in the 1900 census. That census also shows her as having had 9 children, 6 still living. At that time, she was a widow and she and her 6 children lived in Granite Falls Twp, Chippewa County.

In the 1910 census, she is Marry Ellingboe, living in Granite Falls Twp with her children Marry, Thea, Ivor, and Bertha. Also living with the family, and designated “son”, is 20 year-old Seiver Strand, born in Minnesota.

She is probably the “M. H. Ellingboe” shown as the owner of a 160 acre parcel of land in Granite Falls Twp in a 1914 land ownership atlas. The “M. H. Ellingboe” parcel is the northeast quarter-section of Section 12, near Maynard. This parcel is contiguous with a 60.6 acre parcel in Section 7 of Wang Twp, Renville County, owned by “M. Ellingboe.”

In the 1920 census, she is Mary Ellingboe, a 72 year-old widow living in the village of Maynard with her children Thomas, Maria, Thea, and Bertha, all unmarried.

Died as Merith Ellingboe. Her death certificate, for which her son Iver was the informant, shows her birth date as 1 Feb 1848. She died of stomach cancer. The physician who signed her death certificate was L. C. Lima of Montevideo (#8267).

The record of her will is in Chippewa County’s Will Records, Volume D, 1929-1938, for the will year 1934.

  1. 4.  Trond Iversson ELLINGBØE (OPDAL, UVDAL) was born on 16 Feb 1813 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway (son of Iver Trondsson /OPDAL UVDAL and Velgjerd Trondsdotter BREKKE); died on 20 Jan 1902 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota; was buried on 23 Jan 1902 in Wangs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

Trond had been a farmer at Sygarde, Uvdal (gnr. 2/2) from 1833 to 1850. He took over the farm Bokkadn, i Bøkko, N. Ellingbø (now gnr. 33/3) in the Spring of 1850 when the previous owner, Jon Øysteinsson Ellingbø (Bø), emigrated to America with his family. Trond acquired the name Ellingbøe with the farm and kept it when he emigrated with his wife and 8 children (plus 2 granddaughters) in the spring (22 March) of 1862. Trond sold Bøkko to Knut Iversson Eltun on 25 April 1868 for 500 spd. It was said that Embrik and Helge Ellingbøe bought Bøkko from Trond and then sold half to Knut, and that Jon Endresson and Torstein, Helge's sons, each took over half of the remaining part (i.e., 1/4 part each). Most of the information after emigration of Trond and Kjersti was obtained from Lee Ann Ellingboe Randall.

He may be the Thomas Thompson, 56, living in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, in the 1870 census. The household consisted of Thomas, 56, Calista, 53, May 27, Ever 27, Andrew, 17, Betsey, 16, Ada, 12, Thomas, 11, and Betsey, 6. Only the younger Betsey was born in Minnesota. Next door was Torger Thompson with son Thomas, 6, and daughter Sarah, 3, both children born in Minnesota.

Trond settled in Renville County in 1871. According to the History of Renville County:

“Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 {presumably of Wang Twp} in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life.”

Land records show that the Benson land office issued Thrond I Ellingboe a 120 acre homestead on 3 Jun 1884. The land description is as follows:

    1 S½SW 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4
    2 SWSE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W 4

In the 1880 census. Trond, age 66, was a farmer in Wang Township of Renville County. He lived with his wife, Kjirsti, age 64, and their son Thrond, age 22. A few farms away lived another of Trond’s sons, Andris (A. T.).

In the 1900 census, Trond, 87 (born Feb 1813) and widowed, was living with his daughter, Synneva Loe’s family in Wang Township. Synneva, age 53 (born Jul 1846), was married 23 years to Ole Loe, age 52 (born January of 1848). Synneva had borne 11 children, 6 still living. Their children at home at the time were Syver, 22 (born Sept 1877), Kirsti, 18 (born Mar 1882), and Gudbrand, 13 (born Oct 1886). Ole owned the farm. Ole had emigrated from Norway in 1872, Trond and Synneva in 1862.

From the Wang Township section of the History of Renville County:”Trond I. Ellingboe settled on section 4 in the fall of 1871, and lived there the remainder of his life. He died at the age of 89 years.”
