Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Clarence Julian ELLINGBOE was born about Apr 1898 (son of Mathias ELLINGBOE and Margit Jacobsdatter (Maggie) KJOS); died on 27 Feb 1900 in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin; was buried on 2 Mar 1900.

    Notes:

It’s speculative that Clarence Julian, identified only by his death record in the ELCA church books, was a son of Mathias. Mathias, however, is the only Ellingboe living in the Madison area at the time.

    Died:
at age 1 year, 10 months

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Mathias ELLINGBOE was born on 15 Jul 1862 in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin (son of John Øysteinsen ELLINGBØE (BÖE) (BØKKO) and Margrete Øysteinsdatter BØE); died on 25 Apr 1936 in Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin; was buried on 27 Apr 1936 in Riverside Cemetery, Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin.

    Notes:

    Also called Mathew Ostensen.

In the 1900 census, he was Mathew Ellingboe, a house painter living in Stoughton with his wife Maggie and their daughter Minnie. They also housed three boarders.

On August 14, 1903, he attempted to beat his wife to death and then kill himself by hanging. As the headline to the story in the State Journal says, he failed at both. The article says that he was jealous of his wife and had been drinking heavily recently although witnesses said he was not drunk when he tried to murder his wife. The article also said that he “has a wife and one child, a married daughter, and the family conducts a boarding house on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Stoughton.

He called himself, and signed himself, “M.A. Ellingbo” in documents related to his first wife’s estate.

In the 1910 census, he was Matthew M Ellingbo, a house painter living in Stoughton with his second wife Anna. They also have six lodgers.

Seems to be referred to as Nels Ellingbo in a few brief articles in the Janesville Daily Gazette in 1917.

An article in the April 22, 1922, edition of the Capital Times notes that communication with Northfield had been received of the death of Matt’s brother John. The article mentions a sister of Matt and John, Mrs. Jens Cold, also of Stoughton.

In the 1930 census, he and Andrina were living in Stoughton. Matt was a carpenter.

Matt Ellingbo inherited $6,000 from the estate of his wife Andrena, an extraordinary sum in 1934. Also named in her will: $50 to the Martin Luther Orphan’s home, $50 to the United Lutheran Church for mission work in China, and $100 each to Mrs. Emma Eggum, Chicago, Emma Iverson, Dunkirk, and Josie Ruer, Stoughton.

Attending his funeral were his niece and nephew, Bertha Ellingboe Gunderson and John Ellingboe of Northfield. An obit in the Capital Times says that he was the last survivor of “the family of Johan and Margaret Ellingbo, Stoughton pioneers of covered wagon days.”

    Buried:
    as Matt. Ellingbo

Mathias married Margit Jacobsdatter (Maggie) KJOS on 15 Jun 1882 in Christiania, Dane County, Wisconsin. Margit was born on 4 Sep 1861 in Wisconsin; died on 28 Jan 1907; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Stoughton, Dane County, Wisconsin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Her parents were Jacob Jacobsen Kjös and Margit Ostensdatter.

    Died:
January 28th or 29th judging from the gravestone

    Buried:
    as Maggie Ellingbo

    Notes:

    Married:
as Mathias Ostenson Ellingbo and Margit Jacobsdatter Kjos

    • Occupation: Farmer

    Notes:

Jon's family of 6 emigrated to Stoughton, WI, in the spring of 1850, then later moved to Northfield, Minnesota. Information found in the emigration list of 1850 (State Archives, Hamar, Norway): 9 March 1850... John Østeinsen Ellingbøe, 36, Margretta Øysteinsd., 31, Ambjor, 11, Ingeborg, 7, Ingerid, 4, and John, 1/2 .

According to Jim, Jon was from N. Bø; his mother was from Ellingbø (Bøkko). On 1 March 1830, when Jon was 15, his grandfather Andris (presumably, Jim means Jon’s grandfather Jon Andrisson) sold him Bøkko for 600 spd. with the provision that Andris could farm it as long as he was able. Andris died 16 days later. Jon's father farmed it for him for about 10 years until Jon took over and his father become a pensioner on the farm. Jon also gave a pension to Ivar Helgesson and his wife. See pp. 580-581 Ref. 1 for information to 1850. Some post-emigration information provided by John W. Ellingboe, Lloyd W. Ellingboe, William L. Ellingboe. Other information from census records, obituaries, etc. See photographs of cabinet painted with names of Jon and his wife. The cabinet was exhibited in the lobby of the Grindaheim Hotel by Marit and Helge Ellingboe. When the hotel was sold, the cabinet was moved to the nearby new house of Leif Solemsli, Jr.

In the 1870 census he and his family live in Stoughton, Dunkirk Twp, Dane County. The family consists of John Ostenson, 55, Margaret, 52, John, 20, Austin, 18, Andrew, 12, Thomas, 9, and Mathius, 8.

Living in Dunkirk, Dane County at the time of the 1880 census as John Austinson, 65. Living with his wife Margaret, 61, and sons Andrew, 22, and Matthew, 18.

In the 1900 census, he is an 85 year-old widower living as a boarder with the Andrew Morgan family in Pleasant Springs, Dane County, Wisconsin. He is still a farm laborer and is shown as having come to the U.S. in 1850.

An article in the Wisconsin State Journal, 6 Sep 1902, says that he came to the U.S. “over 50 years ago, settled two-and-a-half miles east of Stoughton, lived there 19 years, then went to Minnesota. He returned to Dane County 8 years ago last December and since that time has been living with a granddaughter, Mrs. Knud Soine, near McFarland.” … “He was the father of Mrs. J. O. Cold and Matt Ellingbo, of Stoughton. There are three other sons: John Ellingbo of Northfield, Minnesota, Andrew O. and Austin Ellingbo, of Milton, North Dakota, and four dead children (one son and three daughters), two of whom are buried here.”

The article goes on to say: “Mr. Ellingbo landed here following the period of hostilities between Black Hawk and the whites and years before the red men had wholly vanished. He was one of those brave farmers who transformed the woods and the prairies into beautiful homesteads, before the days of the telegraph and railroad.”

He farmed Bøkko from 1830-1840 with the help of his son Jon, who was the owner from 1830 (age 15) and who took over farming in 1840, giving them a pension that consisted of 2 barrels of barley, 2 cows, 1 heifer, 4 goats and sheep, the southern most storehouse, the use of a 1 mål parcel of land on North Klokkarhaug, lower part, with right to cultivate 1 mål of it, and the pasture land Neståkerreina. Jon's whole family emigrated in the spring of 1850. Trond Ø. Bø Ellingbø emigrated to Minnesota in 1853. Trond Ivarsson Uvdal took over Bøkko 1850, but emigrated to America in the spring of 1862. Øystein and his wife moved back to N. Bø in ca. 1865. The farm was divided into three subfarms, two under Bagetun and one under Nordigarden Ellingbø. Trond Ivarsson sold Bøkko to Knut Ivarsson Eltun for 500 spd. on 25 April 1868.
