One day, after threshing with other farmers, he told the others to go home while he took a nap in the hay stack. As the men were leaving, they looked back to see smoke from the hay stack and rushed back to find Øystein with his head badly beaten. They brought him home and summoned a doctor who stayed the night, but towards morning Øystein died. The men saw a man running away from the burning hay stack, but they could not see who he was. According to Bella, the family knew who had killed Øystein but they never revealed his name because the killer's family were good people.
