1848 -
Generation: 1
1. | Maria Sophia (Sophie) LIND was born on 26 Apr 1848 in Hägghult, Hova, Skaraborgs län, Sweden; was christened on 27 Apr 1848 in Hova, Västergötland, Skaraborgs län, Sweden. Notes:
According to the 1900 census, she had borne 7 children, 3 still living. She came to this country in 1881. The family was living in Pine Creek Township, Morrison County, at the time of the 1900 census.
In the 1910 census, only Hugo is still living at home with her in Little Falls. In that census she is shown as having had only 3 children, all 3 still living. Her name in the census is Sophia Peterson. She has no occupation.
Her property was foreclosed upon in 1914. It’s probable that that had some bearing on she and her children moving to Canada.
A family history of Hugo Peterson incorrectly assigns a fourth child to Aleck and Sophie, a so-called Anna Peterson, born and died in Minneapolis and married to a “Mr. Likevold.” It appears that the author of the family history confused Olga with this non-existent sister.
She is not the “Mrs. Sophia Peterson” who died in Morrison County in 1939. That was a younger woman, the widow of a Gust Peterson.
She may have died in Canada.
A brief mention in the 10 Dec 1920 edition of the Little Falls Herald:
Mrs. S Liekvall and children and Mrs. Liekvall’s mother, Mrs. Sophia Peterson, are here to spend the winter and living on Eighth street northwest. They came here from Nokomis, Canada.
Maria married Erich (Aleck) LARSON PETERSON about 1880 in Stockholm, Sweden. Erich (son of Lars PETERSON) was born in 1845 in Sweden; died on 2 Oct 1900 in Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota; was buried on 4 Oct 1900 in Oakland Cemetery, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota. 2. | Olga PETERSON (1.Maria1) was born in Jul 1885 in New York; died on 18 May 1947 in Morrison County, Minnesota; was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota. Other Events and Attributes:
- Minnesota Death Certificate: 1947-MN-009220
Notes:
She is called Olga V. G. S. in the 1895 state census. Married to Sven and living at 607 12th Street in Little Falls in the 1905 state census.
Not listed in the 1910 or 1920 censuses so it seems likely that they were in Canada during that period.
Because she married an alien, she had to reapply for U.S. citizenship.
She is shown as a widow in the 1940 census. In that census, she lives with her son Clarence in Little Falls in the same house in which both had lived in 1935. Neither were employed. That census shows Olga’s place of birth as New Jersey.

Notes:
Called Hugo A. E. in the 1895 state census.

He is not listed in the draft registration or the 1920 census. It’s possible that he went to Canada with his sister and brother-in-law (and, maybe, his mother).
In the 1930 census, Hugo and Eva Peterson lived in Bemidji. Hugo was a sign painter for a decorator. He was not a vet of the World War. They had no children. Hugo gave his place of birth as New York.
In the 1937-38 Bemidji city directory, Hugo and Eva lived at 2123 Irvine Avenue.

- Baptism: 16 Sep 1898, Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota
Notes:
Called Eugenia, age 5 months, in the 1895 state census. Called Eyen in the 1900 census. Called Mary V., age 10, in the 1905 state census. Not listed at home with her mother and brother in the 1910 census.
An article in the 22 Jan 1904 edition of the Little Falls Herald:
A little daughter of Mrs. Sophia Peterson of the West side was knocked down by a horse Thursday last week but escaped with a scalp wound.
An article in the 25 Jun 1909 edition of the Little Falls Herald:
Mary Peterson, the fifteen year-old daughter of Mrs. Sophia Peterson of the West side was brought before Justice Gerritz’s court yesterday afternoon on the complaint of her mother who asked that she be committed to the Red Wing school for the incorrigibles as she was unable to do anything with the girl. The justice recommended that the girl be sent and, if Judge Taylor approves, committment papers will probably be received here today.
In the 1910 census, she is probably the Mary Peterson, 15, an inmate at the Minnesota State Training School in Red Wing. Her nativity is shown as born in Minnesota to a father born in Norway and a mother born in Sweden.
An article in the 3 May 1912 edition of the Little Falls Herald:
Mary Peterson, a daughter of Mrs. Sophia Peterson of the West side, who only eight months ago had been paroled from the Girls’ Home at Sauk Centre, was caught masquerading as a boy in Minneapolis the latter part of the week and detained. She had purchased some boys’ clothing at the Val. E. Kasparek Clothing store, ostensibly for her husband whom she said was in Canada but in reality to masquerade as a young man and travel.
The girl had gone to Minneapolis and there purchased her ticket for Chicago and sent her trunk ahead of her when her peculiar actions in men’s clothing and imperfect disguise was noticed by a detective who placed her under arrest. Upon being taken to the matron at the police station she owned up to her sex and stated that never more would she go masquerading in boys’ clothes as the trousers were too hard to keep up. They were slipping down on her and she was smoking a cigarette when taken into custody.
She has been returned to the Girls’ Home at Sauk Cente.
A family history of Hugo Peterson claims that she, as Marie Peterson, died in Tombstone, Arizona. That woman, according to the SSDI, was born 14 Nov 1894 and died September 1982 in Douglas in Cochise County, Arizona. Her Social Security number had been issued in Minnesota.
Baptism:
probably Bethel Lutheran
Died:
SSDI as Marie Peterson
