Although Frank is shown in the 1910 census as having only been married to Prudence (“M1”), there is a gravestone in the Brookville Cemetery for a Lillian Crook “27 y 2 m 12 d wife of W.F. Crook.” Lillian’s maiden name is indicated in the church records as Aikens. Buried with this Lillian is Eula May Crook, 19 Mar 1895 - 8 Sep 1907. This Eula May is shown as living with her grandparents, Charles and Isabelle Aikins, in Readstown, Vernon County, at the time of the 1900 census. Not too far away from the Aikinses (on the same census page) is the William Crook family (with wife Catharine, 45, and daughter Pora, 16, along with Minnie and Edward Potter and Harold and Fred Crook). William and Catharine had been married for 30 years and are the parents of William Frank Crook. In the 1880 census, the William and Katherine Crook family farm is only a few farms away from the Clouse Bowe farm. Neither Eula nor Lillian are listed in the index of Vernon County deaths.

Either this William Crook, or, possibly his father if he was also William, helped to build the Readstown United Methodist Church in 1900.

Ivan drowned with his cousin Clifford “at Black Bottom” on December 23, 1934. Norma says it was in the creek on the Bowe (then Carl’s) farm.

Nicknamed “Little Bubby” or “Little Buddy.”

From the Vernon County Broadcaster, December 27, 1934:

Drowning of 2 Boys Saddens Community

A duo-tragedy occurred last Sunday afternoon at half past three when two small boys, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl and Mr. and Mrs. Odin Olson, met death by drowning in the upper Black Bottom creek.

The two five year old boys were playing on the ice of the creek, which was exceedingly thin at that place. It is supposed that the ice broke while they were at play, and the shock of the chilling water stupefied them to such a degree that they were unable to reach the bank. The water was four feet deep at the place where they were drowned.

They were discovered half an hour later by the other Nundahl children, who ran for help. Mrs. Nundahl, with the aid of two childen, rescued the bodies from the water and summoned assistance from a neighbor.

The entire community combines in offering the Nundahl and Olson families the deepest of sympathy in this period when joy and happiness is so prevalent. Funeral services will be held this Thursday at the Folsom church, with the Reverend Haakenson officiating.

From the Vernon County Censor, December 26, 1934:

Two Lads Drown in Black Bottom

One of the most heart-breaking tragedies that the Censor has been called upon to chronicle in years took place last Sunday afternoon in upper Black Bottom when young sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oden Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl met death in the icy waters of the creek.

The older boys of the two families had gone sliding earlier in the afternoon, and Clifford Olson and Ivan Nundahl, both not yet five years of age, got the same idea and started out with the sled. The first intimation of trouble came when the older boys returned to the Nundahl home and were met by the dog whose frantic agitation finally led them to the bank of the creek where the bodies of the two young lads were found in the water. From marks on the bank it was apparent that the dog had tried to pull them out but failed.

Mrs. Nundahl, although frail and ill and a mother only six weeks ago, plunged into the ice-cold water above her waist to retrieve the bodies. She was prostrated from the shock and grief and her condition was serious for a time. Mr. Nundahl was not at home at the time of the shocking accident.

The double funeral will be held at the Nundahl home near Brookville, and at the Kickapoo church Thursday afternoon, Rev. Haagenson officiating. To the heart-stricken families the most sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out at this Christmas season when their joy has been transformed to bitter grief.

    His obituary:

Ivan Tollef Nundahl, son of Carl and Mearl Nundahl, was born March 23, 1930, and departed from this life December 23, 1934, at the age of four years and nine months.

He leaves to mourn his departure besides his parents, one sister, Eileen, four brothers, Selmar, Kenneth, Merlin, and Donald, his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sever Nundahl, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Crook, five uncles Tillman Nundahl, Otto, Clair, Floyd and Faye Crook, three aunts, Mrs. Odin Olson, Mrs. Stanley Simpson, and Mrs. Gale Aikins, a number of cousins and many other relatives and friends.

Little Buddy, as he was better known, was baptized into the Kickapoo Lutheran Church in May, 1930, by Rev. Finstad. He was of a sweet and loving disposition and his smile won everyone’s heart. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones but we know he has gone to that greater home prepared for the blest and is same in the arms of Jesus.

Funeral services were held from the Carl Nundahl home in Brookville and from the Kickapoo Lutheran Church December 2nd, Rev, H. T. Haagenson officiating.

    Card of Thanks

We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who so kindly rendered their help in the tragic death and burial of our dear little sons, Ivan Nundahl and Clifford Olson. We wish to thank Rev. Haagenson and Rev. Lunde for their words of comfort, the singers at the home and the church, the pallbearers, and to the Brookville community club and others for the beautiful flowers, and those who donated to missions in their memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl and Family
Mr. and Mrs. Odin Olson and Family

Norma says that Bubby and Clifford told their mothers that they were going to the barn to play but instead decided to go ice skating on the thin ice. Mearl and Eileen found the boys and got them out of the water and took them to the house on sleds.

    Notes:

    David Adrian Crook?
??David Adrian Crook, age 64 of Elk Creek-Viola, Wis., died on Sunday Aug. 2, 2009, of esophageal cancer.??He was born on March 30, 1945, in Viroqua, to Clair and Ida (Midthun) Crook. David was an accomplished man with great exuberance and a real passion for everything he did in his life. Dave was "The Master Inventor." He was excited to say to you every day "Do you want to see what I invented today?" And he was brilliant at it. He was called upon by many when they needed help, whether they needed something to be repaired or if they got stuck, or whatever. He was always happy to help, and if he didn’t know the solution readily, he would find ways to get the job done right, including making a new tool or parts. His passion for music went beyond listening or learning and playing the bass guitar and keyboards. Music was embodied in his soul. A "Musical Tribute to Dave Crook" is being planned and will be held at a later time.??David started his education in the one room grade school at Elk Creek. He graduated co-valedictorian from Viola High School in 1963. He went on to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he also worked for the State Highway Commission as a surveyor. In February 1967, he enlisted in the Navy. He worked in Naval Security Intelligence as an electronic communications technician with a Top Secret Clearance. He was stationed in the Philippines, Scotland and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. While at the Pentagon, he met his wife, Maryann Tomaszewski, of Scranton, Penn., on March 2, 1972, and they married under a dogwood tree in the country in Fairfax, Va. on July 8, 1972. David and Maryann celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary this summer. After seven years in the Navy, David and Maryann returned to Wisconsin in 1974. They started a manufacturing business, Duraframe Dipnet, in 1975, and Duraframe Dipnet has become the number one supplier of fish dipnets to the aquaculture industry in the nation. They have been in business for 35 years, and with all his great training, the business will continue on.??David is survived by his "bride" (as he called her, just like Clair said of Ida) Maryann Crook; his very close sister, Rebecca (Roger) Hooker and their children and grandchildren, Angi (Eric) Endicott, Alan (Nadine) Hooker and Aryn (Staci) Hooker; nieces and nephews in Colorado, Annette, David, Susan and Andy Bill; very close special friends, Lisa, Jeff, Sabon, Gary and Bob; his devoted employees, Nathan, Kim, Greg and Carrie; and a multitude of close and loving friends and relatives.??Private services have been held.??The Musical Tribute to Dave Crook will be held at a later time. (The Memorial Musical Tribute was held on November 8, 2009, at the Field House in La Farge.)??Donations in David’s memory to The Kickapoo Valley Rescue Squad in Viola, would be appreciated.??The Sime Funeral Home in Readstown served the family.??Online condolences may be offered at www.simefuneralfo rum.com.??Happy are the memories of the Great Man David Crook was. He will be greatly missed by us all.
