  1. 1.  Erik Ingebrigtsen FLAAHAMMER was born on 21 Nov 1829 in Rød, Næssæt, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 24 Feb 1913 in Cuyuna, Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 26 Feb 1913 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1913-MN-002953
    • Occupation: Gaardbruger Selveier, Fisherman
    • Baptism: 6 Dec 1829, Næssæt, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

Shown as Erik Ingebrigtsen, the Husfader of the Gustad domicile in Kvernes in the 1865 census. His year of birth is shown as 1830, from Næssæt. The November, 1829, date comes from the parish birth record for Rød, Nesset which also shows a farm name of Flaahammer (as does the record for his marriage to Ane).

Erik is shown as the owner (”Gaardbruger Selveier”) of the farm (on 216, Gustad) in the 1865 census. However, in the 1886 land register, H. Iversen is listed as the “land owner or user” of the holding (16-6, old 127-216a) on Gulstad (”commonly written Gustad”) in Kvernes. This suggests that primogeniture prevailed and that Halvor inherited the farm after his father perished. Perhaps Erik and/or Ane held the property in trust until Halvor reached majority. This possibility may be consistent with the 1891 census in which Erik is called “Føderådsmand og bruger.”

Erik Ingebrigtsen Gustad of Kvernes, age 65 and born 1829 and a farmer, emigrated from Kristiansund on 2 August 1894 aboard a Dominion liner, bound for Minnesota. Accompanying him were his 65 year-old wife, Anne, his 41 year-old son, a laborer, Halvor, 24 year-old Lise Gustad, an unmarried maid, and 23 year-old Petrine Gustad, an unmarried maid.

Five Gustads arrived in Quebec (Quebec City or Montreal) in August of 1894 aboard the S.S. Vancouver which had sailed from Liverpool. The destination of all five was “Aitken, Minnesota.” The five were: E. Gustad, a 65 year-old male, A. Gustad, a 65 year-old female, “wife”, H. Gustad, a 41 year-old male laborer, L. Gustad, a 24 year-old female “servant”, and P. Gustad, a 28 year-old female “servant.”

According to his death certificate, the informant was Dr. Sewall of Crosby, the doctor who treated him. Sewall indicated that Erik died of old age.

    Birth:
His death certificate indicated that he was born on the 22nd. Ole Weflaat calls him Erik Flåhammer (Rød).

Erik married Ane Arntsdatter VINJE on 22 Jul 1861 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Ane (daughter of Arne Andersen VINJE and Eli Olsdatter) was born on 6 Nov 1828 in Grytten, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 7 Aug 1914 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 9 Aug 1914 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota. Notes:

In the 1865 census, shown as Elen Eriksdatter, born in 1862 in Qværnæs.

Shown in the parish record as the daughter of Erik Ingebrigtsen and “Ane Hansdatter.”

Elen Rasmussen Gustad from Kvernes, b. 1863 and married, emigrated with her two children from Kristiansund on 4 May 1887 aboard an American liner, bound for Minnesota.

Because Annie Gustad claimed to have had 7 children, 5 still living, at the time of the 1900 census, Ellen must have died before 1900.

An Ellen Rasmussen died in St. Louis County in 1891:

    RASMUSSON ELLEN NA 03/19/1891 102

Called Mary, the name of his father’s second wife, in Eaner’s marriage record.

    Birth:
Odd has her birthplace as Halvorstua, Bådalen, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal

    Died:
    indexed as Ellen Rasmusson

Ellen married Peder (Peter) Rasmussen RØD on 1 May 1883 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway. Peder (son of Rasmus Eriksen RØD and Marit Olsdatter) was born on 13 Sep 1854 in Øre, Tingvoll, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 28 May 1924 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 30 May 1924 in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota. 2. 3.  Anna Eriksdatter GUSTAD Descendancy chart to this point (1.Erik1) was born on 12 May 1864 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; was christened on 5 Jun 1864 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 5 Jun 1864, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 5 Oct 1879, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

In the 1865 census, shown as Anna Eriksdatter, born in 1864 in Qværnæs.

Mabel says that Anna was lost in Liverpool, England. Perhaps kidnapped into “white slavery.” Other sources say "lost in Seattle."

She is not listed in the emigration records for Kristiansund, most notably not with her sister, brother’s wife, step-brother, mother, and father when those five Gustads emigrated in August of 1894. She is not mentioned in Ever’s 1890 letter either. Clearly her mother considered her dead in 1900. Ane is shown as having had 7 children, 5 still living, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.

An erroneous entry for her in Geni calls her Anne Johanna Eriksdatter Mek, born in 1864 and dying in childbirth in 1887. That Anne is shown in the 1875 census as the step-daughter (pleiedatter) of Johannes Halvorsen Meek. She had been born in Kornstad.

  3. 4.  Edvard GUSTAD Descendancy chart to this point (1.Erik1) was born on 6 May 1866 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; was christened on 17 Jun 1866 in Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway; died on 9 Feb 1942 in Crosby, Crow Wing County, Minnesota; was buried on 12 Feb 1942 in Lakewood Cemetery, Crosby, Irondale Twp, Crow Wing County, Minnesota.

    • Baptism: 17 Jun 1866, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 2 Oct 1881, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

Not listed in the 1865 Norwegian census.

Edvard E. Gustad of Kvernes, born 1866, and a Korporal in the Army, emigrated from Kristiansund on 25 June 1891 aboard a Cunard ship bound for Duluth. Notes indicate with permission.

Ed spoke to a WPA interviewer ( N. K. Long) in April of 1939. Some of what transcribed from the interview was erroneous, presumably the fault of the interviewer. In the interview, Ed said that he had started school at the local parish school at age 7 and was confirmed at age 16. “Then he had a short course of high school at Vebensad, Norway, graduation when 17.

“Between the ages of 19 and 22 he went through a military school in Trondhjem, graduated in 1879. He was a corporal in the Norwegian army and served for three years.

“Then he obtained permission to come to America. He reached Duluth in 1891 and soon found himself doing carpenter work for the contractors Everson and Christianson. He stayed there until the spring of 1893.

“Then he moved out to Aitkin County and bought railroad land. He had three brothers, Andrew, Ever, and Halvor who had preceded him and among them they secured the whole half Section 5 in Farm Island Twp. from the railroad company. Edward cleared about 16 acres of his farm, built a house, barn, and granary, and lived there 16 years. He sold this farm in 1910 to a man named Bergman from Carver County. Mr. Bergman lives on this land today.

“Edward’s brothers, Ever and Halvor, lived with their parents on the father’s place. Both are dead. Ever had a family. Two sisters who lived in Duluth are dead and there is one sister still living, Mrs. Peteine Skogan.

“The Gustads moved from Aitkin County to Cuyuna in 1910 and Edward was elected to be the first mayor of Cuyuna. According to Ed, there were then three or four hundred people and six or seven residences.

“He secured contracts and built a store for John Petersborg, the Spaulding Hotel, the other Crosby Hotel, the school house, a bank, and many private homes.

“In 1913 he moved to Crosby. He built the Albert Hummel building, the Will S. Pitt and Co. building, at least 20 houses for Roger Brown Co., an addition to the Crosby bank, and a whole block of residences in the 100s of 2nd Street. Then he moved to Lot 2 on Crosby Beach and built a splendid residence for his family.

“The Gustads belong to the Norwegian-Lutheran church of Deerwood. Politically, they are ‘usually Republican.’ Mr. Gustad was a member of the Farm Island Town Board and was treasurer of school district No. 2 in Aitkin County.

“When asked about the additional building he had done in the county, he mentioned: the N.P. depot at Deerwood in 1915, the sanitarium at Deerwood, the Swartara school, the Tamarack school, the Lawler school, the Autumba school, and the community hospital at Moose Lake. In two years work at Crosby he worked on more than 50 houses. He build 20 houses for Geo. Crosby and all of ‘Honeymoon Row’ which are all yet in use. Sometimes he used a construction crew of as high as 25 or 30 men. He built several residences in Aitkin before Crosby started. He built a store building there for Ed. Howard.”

He also built the Lutheran Church in Deerwood.

He first shows up in the 1892-93 Polk’s City Directory for Duluth as Gustad Edward, carp, bds Andrew Everson, W P. He has the same entry in the 1893-94 directory. He is not in the 1894-95 city directory.

Living in Farm Island township, Aitkin County, next door to his half-brother Ever, at the time of the 1900 census. Shown as 34 years old, born in January of 1866. His occupation is shown as day laborer and he is shown as able to read and write and to speak English. He lives in a house (and not a farm) which he owns, free and clear, no mortgage. He and his wife emigrated to the U.S. in 1894.

In the 1905 state census, “Edd” Gustad lives with his family in Farm Island Twp. The household consists of Edd, 39, a carpenter, Elisa, 39, Margett, 7, Agnes, 9 months, Erick, 76, and Anna, 76. Living next door are the “Mackemans.” The Ever Eversons are no longer living nearby.

Had an appendix operation in Duluth in September of 1906.

Moved to Cuyuna in the spring of 1909 according to a 1910 Duluth Herald article.

In May of 1910, he was building “Dr. R.J. Sewall’s hospital” in Cuyuna.

In July of 1910, he was elected president of the village council in Cuyuna.

Living in Rabbit Lake township, Crow Wing County, at the time of the 1910 census in April of 1910. Shown as age 44, married 15 years, a building contractor.

One of the three incorporators of the Cuyuna Range Publishing Co., incorporated in December of 1911.

Was Cuyuna Village President in 1912.

Was a member, and and an officer, in the Moose Lodge in Crosby as early as February of 1915.

Living in Irondale township, Crow Wing county (ED 123) at the time of the 1920 census (March 9th). Shown as age 53 which agrees with a birthdate in 1866. Immigrated in 1891, naturalized in 1896.

Still living in Irondale township in the 1930 census. The household is shown as not having a radio set.

The 1937-38 and 1939-40 Brainerd city directories, which include other communities in Crow Wing County, lists an Edw Gustad in Irondale.

In the 1940 census, he and “Elesa” lived in Irondale Twp. He was a carpenter and a contractor but he was not employed. He and Elesa had fourth-grade educations.

His death certificate says that he was a building contractor, with wife Elise, and his usual residence was Irondale. The informant for his death certificate was Mrs. Fred Gustad of Crosby. He died of heart problems but he also had chronic intestinal obstructions due to adhesions.

The Duluth newspaper of November, 1915, notes that Edward Gustad had the contract for building the Northern Pacific Railway’s new Deerwood depot.

The Duluth Herald of August 22, 1911, notes that Ed Gustad of Crosby was awarded the contract for two identical schools, one in Crosby and one in Ironton, at a cost of $6000 each.

The “Remember When” columns in the Crosby Courier note some of the buildings that Ed Gustad worked on: an addition to the First National Bank in September, 1927; the Range Tea Company store in July, 1929; the carpentry work on the Koop Funeral Home in September of 1935; and the R. J. Libby home on Serpent Lake in the spring of 1936.

His naturalization records are likely these, under Aitkin County for Edward Gustad:

    • Baptism: 1 Jan 1871, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway
    • Confirmation: 10 Oct 1886, Kvernes, Averøy, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

Mary Rasmussen’s list of baptismal sponsors includes “gbrdtr Kristine Eriksdtr Gustad.” That “Kristine” is probably Petrine.

Petrine’s nephew Rudolph Rasmussen was one of the witnesses to her marriage to Jacob.

Confirmation record is for Petrine. She was living at Gustad at that time and had been born at Gustad.

She came to the U.S. via Liverpool and Quebec with her parents in 1894. Couldn’t find her in the 1895 state census.

Apparently counted in the 1900 census as “Katrina Gustad”, a house servant for the Frank Heuse family in the village of Aitkin. She is shown as born in November, 1870, in Norway and having emigrated in 1894, being in this country for 6 years.

In the 1903 Duluth city directory, she was Tina Gustad, domestic, living at 1228½ E 1st.

In the 1904 Duluth city directory, Petrine Gustad, a domestic, lived at 1228½ E 1st.

In the 1905 state census, she is Petrina Gustad, 35, a domestic in the home of William Bailey in Duluth.

In the 1906 city directory, still a domestic, she lived at 725 E 1st.

Shown as 48 or 49 in the 1920 census enumeration which suggests a birth year of no earlier than 1870. Years of immigration and naturalization are illegible.

According to the 1930 census, apparently emigrated in 1894.

In the 1940 census, she was a 69 year-old widow living Duluth with her son Edmond.

Her son was the informant for her death certificate. Edmund did not know the name of his mother’s mother. Petrina died of a cerebral hemorrhage.

The Wennberg family tree (and others) on Ancestry incorrectly has Petrina marrying a Peder Bugge.

    Died:
    St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth

Petrine married Jacob SKOGEN on 14 Feb 1907 in St. Louis County, Minnesota. Jacob was born about 1863 in Norway; died on 29 Mar 1937 in St. Louis County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Baptism: 5 Aug 1883, Bremsnes, Kvernes, Møre og Romsdal, Norway

    Notes:

He is called Rudolf Sæther in the Kristiansund emigration records for his departure with his sister and mother on May 4, 1887.

Mother’s maiden name shown as “Gaustad” in the death records.

A Rudolph Rasmuson, born in June of 1883, was shown in the 1900 census as a servant (“hostler”) at an Aitkin hotel apparently run by John O’Maley. This Rudolph is shown as having come to this country in 1892.

In the 1901 Superior city directory he is shown as Rudolph Rasmussen, “appr” at Superior Ship Bldg. Co, the employer of his father.

In the 1905 state census, he is living in Superior with Peter and Mary. He is 23 and a machinist.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory, he may be the Rudolph Rasmussen, machinist, living at 716 21st Avenue S.

He is the Rudolph Resmussen, 27, living in Minneapolis at 2411 Sixth Street in the 1910 census. At that point, he had been married for two years to a 21 year old woman named Emma, of Swedish extraction. They had had no children. He was a machinist. Couldn’t read the year in which he emigrated.

Registered for the draft in Milwaukee on September 12, 1918, as Rudolf Rasmussen. He is 35, born June 18, 1883, and is a superintendent at Worthington Pump & Machinery (or Manufacturing) in Cudahy. His closest relative is Emma Rasmussen, wife, living with him at 229 Mason in Milwaukee. He is described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and light brown hair. He claims that one of (both right and left are written) his eyes is “defective.”

In the 1919 Minneapolis city directory, he is a superintendent living at 401 S E 4th Street.

In the 1920 census, he is living at 401 4th Street S. E. in Minneapolis. His trade or occupation is not legible but he works in the auto industry. The family consists of Rudolph Rassmuson, 34, who came to this country from Norway in 1890, Emma, 30, born in Sweden, and their son, Russel, 8, born in Minnesota.

Probably the 46 year old lodger, machinist for an agricultural implement company, divorced, and living in Minneapolis as Rudolf Rasmussen in the 1930 census. He came to this country in 1886. His address appears to be 327 14th Avenue S. E.

In the 1940 census, he and Alice live at 2843 Williams Avenue in Minneapolis in a house they own that is worth $2800. They lived at a different residence in Minneapolis in 1935. Rudolf is a machinist for a farm machinery manufacturing company. He earned $1680 in 1939. Rudolf had a 6th grade education, Alice had had two years of high school.

His obit says that he was a Minneapolis resident for 47 years and a member of Augustana Lutheran Church for 25 years. He had been a machinist for Minneapolis-Moline and was a member of the Superior, Wisconsin, masonic lodge and the Scottish Rite in Minneapolis. There is no mention of his son Russell in his obit. There is, however, mention of a Mrs. Bertha Murphy, of Minneapolis, referred to as Rudolf’s sister. Other sisters mentioned as surviving him are Mrs. Nellie Petersen, Mrs. Gyda Tollefseon, and Mrs. Ruth Kamps.

The informant for his death certificate was his wife Alice L. They resided at 2843 Williams Ave. S.E. Rudolf had been a machinist for Minneapolis Moline. He died of pneumonia.

In the 1900 census (June 21st), 15 year-old Mary Rasmussen, born in Norway in March, 1885, is a servant for, and living with, the Frank Seavey family in Aitkin Village in the township of Aitkin in Aitkin County, Minnesota.

In the 1901 Superior city directory, she is Mary Rasmussen, seamstress, living at 432 Clough, the address of her father.

Marie and Irene were living in Los Angeles at the time of the 1930 census. Since Sandy is still living in Minneapolis in the house that he and Marie and Irene lived in in 1920, Marie must have left Sandy. In the 1930 census, Marie, 45, is shown as still married and was first married at age 18. Marie is shown as having emigrated in 1886. Marie’s occupation is shown as a dress-maker working out of her home.

In the 1927 and 1928 St. Paul city directories, she was Margery Gustad, a surgical nurse at Bethesda Hospital.

In the 1929 Minneapolis city directory, she may be the Margt Gustad, student, living at 325 6th Avenue S E, apartment 12.

In the 1930 census, she was Marjorie Gustad (indexed as “Guitard”), a 32 year-old single registered nurse living in St. Paul.

In the 1930 and 1931 and 1932 and 1933 St. Paul city directories, she was Margery Gustad, nurse, Bethesda Hospital.

At the time of her mother’s WPA interview in June of 1937, she and Knute lived in Ft. Peck, Montana.

  7. 12.  Einar GUSTAD Descendancy chart to this point (4.Edvard2, 1.Erik1) was born on 16 Jun 1898 in Aitkin County, Minnesota; died on 23 Aug 1901 in Aitkin County, Minnesota; was buried in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

This is speculative and is based on a photo by Mavon, in Find A Grave, who says that the surname for this child, whose gravestone was photographed in Dorris, is either Gustad or Everson. He is not listed in the 1900 census and his birth date is only nine months after his sister Margaret. Given that Ed and Elise later named a second son Einar, he’s probably Ed and Elise’s child as shown here. If he’s not a child of Ed and Elise Gustad, then he is probably a child of Ever and Betsy Everson. Either way, he’s an unknown whose existence is marked only by a stone commemorating his demise.

  8. 13.  Agnes GUSTAD Descendancy chart to this point (4.Edvard2, 1.Erik1) was born on 30 Jan 1900; died on 19 Feb 1900; was buried in Dorris Cemetery, Cedar Lake, Farm Island Twp, Aitkin County, Minnesota.

    Notes:

Implied by the information on Elsie’s birth certificate which indicated that Elsie was child #7, of which 4 were still alive.

Confirmed by gravestone in Dorris Cemetery and the photo of same by Mavon on Find A Grave.

She died of pneumonia but is noted as having “mongolism.” The informant for her death certificate was Vera Phelps, presumably an employee of the School for the Feeble Minded. Elsie’s parents were shown as Ed Gustad and Lizzie Young.

Elsie’s parents were interviewed two different times by WPA interviewers in the ‘30s. Elsie was not mentioned, or even indirectly referred to, in either one. Elsie’s mother’s interview, in particular, specifically omits Elsie but lists the four living children and cites “four children that died when very young.”
