Helmer Edwin Berquam passed away at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester on Jan. 18 at the age of 72. A family service was held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hanson Funeral Home in Kenyon and at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Urland Lutheran church. The Rev. George O. Thompson officiated at both services. At the family service Kenneth Flom sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", accompanied by Mrs. Donald Hanson at the organ. At the church service he sang "Beyond The Sunset" and Softly and Tenderly", accompanied by Mrs. Truman Skaro, the church organist. The pallbearers were Larry Flom, Richard Berquam, Eugene Krogstad, Leslie Flom and John Flom, all nephews of Mr. Berquam. interment took place at the Urland Cemetery. Mr. Berquam was born to Hjalmer and Elsie Syverson Berquam on Dec. 19, 1897 in Wanamingo Township, Goodhue County. He was baptized and confirmed at the Urland Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. On May 17, 1928, he was united in marriage to Gladys Flom of Dennison. The established their home in Holden Township where they have since resided. Mr. Berquam is survived by his widow, Gladys; four daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Ione) Lundell, Mrs. Glenn (Gloria) Peter, both of Cannon Falls, Mrs. Jack (Lois) Burdick of Boulder, Colo., and Helen at home; three sons, Harlan of South St. Paul, Gerhard of Inver Grove Heights and Donald of Dennison; also 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 3 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Christine Mooney and Mrs. Ann Krogstad, both of Granite Falls; and one brother, Alfred Berquam of Kenyon. He was preceded in death by his parents.
