John Nathan ("Nate") Kildahl, age 88, of Park Ridge, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, November 18. Nate was born July 18, 1920 in North Branch, Minnesota. He attended St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota. He was a veteran of both World War II and Korea. He entered military service in 1942 and served in the Army Air Corps as a navigator. Nate was stationed in the Pacific with the 8th Combat Cargo Squadron in New Guinea, Philippines, Okinawa, and eventually Tokyo, Japan. During the Korean War he served as a navigator-bombardier with the 17th Bombardment Group (Light) Night Intruder in Pusan, Korea from 1952-1953. He flew 50 combat missions in the B-26 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals. Nate was employed by the Barber Coleman Company as a heating and air conditioning engineer and salesman beginning in 1941. After he returned to the States from Japan in 1946 he rejoined the Barber Coleman Company - and again in 1953 after returing from Korea. He retired from Barber Coleman in 1975 following nearly 30 years of service. Nate used his innate mechanical and engineering skills constantly, whether helping family, friends, church or condo association. He was a lifelong and avid yachtsman who kept a sailboat or powerboat in the Wilmette Harbor for decades until his death. He, family and friends sailed the Great Lakes every spring, summer and fall. He spent many winters in the Florida Keys. He was a member of Edison Park Lutheran Church for nearly 80 years and was active in leadership positions in various church committees and organizations. Nate is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn (nee Larson); daughters, Barbara (David) Adams and Karen (Christopher) Woodward; five grandchildren, Karen (Andrew) Adams-Moran, Matthew (Tierney nee Callahan) Adams, Erik Adams; Spencer and Travis Woodward; and a great-grandson, Ethan (Matthew and Tierney) Adams and two other great-grandchildren soon to arrive. He was preceded in death by his brother Lars Charles ("Chuck") Ingvar Kildahl.
