  Notes	Ferne Jones Burghardt, born April 22, 1921, in Tangent, Oregon, died March 23, 2010, in Salem, Oregon. Ferne was a long time resident of Salem with her last years being spent at Capital Manor. Ferne was born as Hilda Meinert in the center of the Willamette Valley just East of Corvallis. At a very young age she was placed in the care of the Children's Farm Home after her mother passed away. She was then adopted by the Jones family in Salem during her school years. The Jones family changed her name from Hilda Meinert to Ferne Jones. Ferne was a member of the first graduating class at the newly built Salem High School; now known as North Salem High. Upon graduating high school she started Nurses training in Portland at Emmanuel Hospital, graduating as a RN in 1939. Returning to Salem she worked as a RN at the Hospital until she joined the Army as a nursing officer at the start of World War II. While serving in Wales at an Army station hospital she met and after the war married her husband, Cornelius Burghardt. After her Army discharge she continued her nurses training in Cleveland completing a NR Anesthesia certification. Ferne then returned to the Northwest and joined her husband as he was moved around the country for his work with the BLM and then the Federal Highway department. She worked at multiple hospitals in Oregon, Washington, and Maryland. During this time Ferne raised two daughters and a son. From 1962 on Ferne set roots down in Salem working at the Salem General Hospital, later Salem Hospital, progressing up to supervising nurse of recovery room. After her children completed school Ferne attended Linfield College, earning her BA in Liberal Studies in 1982. Ferne loved nature and enjoyed hiking with the Chemeketians until her health prevented her from continuing. Her love of the Oregon Coast was very special, a love she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Ferne was also active in politics, Planned Parenthood, and nature efforts in the local community. Ferne is survived by her husband of 60 years, Cornelius (Neal) Burghardt; her daughters and husbands, Nancy and Derroll Mathews, Mary and John Barry; son and wife, Ed and Ingrid Burghard; grandchildren, Joanna Mathews, Ryan Burghardt, and Andrena Burghardt.
