In the 1900 census, he was a farmer in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County. He owned his farm, albeit with a mortgage, and had come to the U.S. in 1871.

Marit (daughter of Asbjørn Andrisson HAGASTRØND and Sigri Endresdatter TWEDT) was born on 15 Dec 1847 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 2 Feb 1933 in Goodhue County, Minnesota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dennison, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Marith’s birth record clearly names her mother as Sigerid Andersdatter Bergeeiet and her father as Asbjørn Andersen Steile. She was each parent’s second illegitimate child. The sponsors at Marith’s baptism were Haaver and Bøye Leite, Ole Tostensen Berge, Guri Leite, and Berith Andersdatter Steile. (Liethe or Liete is a part of the Berge farm in Høre.) Haaver was the member of the parish who would be responsible for raising the child.

In the 1865 census, she was a maid for the country merchant Peder P Odnæs and his wife Caroline. Marit was shown, incorrectly, as born in 1849.

In the 1900 census, she had had 12 children, only 6 of whom were still living. She had come to the U.S. in 1871.

She left for the U.S. in the spring of 1873 with her son Ola Torsteinsson, b. 1859, whose father was Torstein Sjugurdsson Brekke. Somewhere along the line, at about the time she went to America or perhaps after she was there, she married the much younger man Jon Jonssen Sveji who was 29 years old.

Asbjørn married Sigri Endresdatter TWEDT. Sigri (daughter of Endre Madsson TVEIT and Marit Amundsdatter TVEITAMOEN) was born on 28 Oct 1816 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died in 1896 in Minnesota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery, Dennison, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Her baptismal sponsors were Berith Iversdatter Gevre, Gierthrue Olsdatter Torpe, Sergeant Knud Torp, Finkell Nielsen Twedt, Mads Iversen Twedt, and one more whose name I can’t decipher.

Reliable sources disagree on the mother or mothers of Asbjørn Anderssen’s two illegitimate children (Anders Asbjørnsen, b. 1844, and Marith Asbjørnsdatter, b. 1847).

One source calls her Sigri Andersdatter Skjefte, b. 3 Nov 1814 on Skjefte, bapt. 10 Nov 1814 in Hurums, and has her as the mother of Anders as well as Marit. He has Sigri’s parents as Anders Tollevsen Skjefte (1763-1836) and Sigri Syversdatter Østrem (1777-?).

dtwidt in his Darren Twidt Family Tree also has both children with the same mother but he calls her Sigrid Endresdatter Tveit, b. 28 Oct 1816, bapt. 10 Nov 1816, to parents Endre Madson Tveit and Marith Amondsdatter Tvedtmoen. He has this Sigrid dying in 1896 in Warsaw, Rice County.

(Note that the two girls, Sigri A and Sigrid E, were baptized exactly two years apart in the same church.)

It appears that dwtwidt is correct. The main reasons for this conclusion are: 1) Anders’s death certificate claims his mother was Sigrid Twidt, and 2) Marith’s mother Sigrid lived with, and is buried with, Marith and her husband Andrew Svien in the Vang cemetery in Dennison, Minnesota. That Sigrid, by then Sigrid Brekke, died in 1896.

Vang A, p. 444, calls her Sigrid Endresdatter Tørpeeiga, the mother of Andris. The bygdebok does not mention Marith.

Sigrid was living with the Sviens in the 1880 census.
