    • Minnesota Birth Certificate: 1935-MN-001342
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1974-MN-008967

    Notes:

Her birth was noted in the 29 Apr 1935 edition of the Star, p. 16.

Her death certificate, for which the informant was Mrs. Arthur Hendrickson, Jr., of Onamia, says that Patricia was a suicide who died at her home at 3905 Harbor Lane, Plymouth. She died from alcohol and meprobamate poisoning. Her body was autopsied. She had been a keypunch operator at an air conditioning equipment company.

(Meprobamate was marketed by Wallace Labs under the name Miltown. It was ubiquitous in the 1950s as a mild tranquilizer but, by 1970, was considered a sedative and was a controlled substance.)

Her death was noted in the 18 Apr 1974 edition of the Tribune, p. 22. That death notice gave her address as 3205 Harbor Lane.

Her entry on Find A Grave:

Patricia 'Patsy' was the fourth child born to Arthur and Gertrude Hendrickson. She had three siblings, Joyce, Barbara and Arthur, as well as four half-siblings. Patricia was married to Orville Dean Bates; the couple later divorced. It is believed they had five children. Patsy was preceded in death by her sister Joyce Hendrickson, and her half-brother David Dale Marshall.

A memorial service was held for Patricia at the Funeral Home.

Patricia married Orville Dean BATES on 28 Jul 1952 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, and was divorced before 1970. Orville was born on 22 May 1933 in South Dakota; died on 17 Sep 1982 in Sherburne County, Minnesota; was buried in St. Pius X Cemetery, Lake Fremont, Sherburne County, Minnesota. 1. 2.  Arthur Clarence HENDRICKSONArthur Clarence HENDRICKSON was born on 17 Jan 1908 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota (son of Karsten Henrik (Charles) HENDRICKSON and Martha BOWE); died on 8 Aug 1974 in Onamia, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota; was buried in Foster Cemetery, Cove, Mille Lacs County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Birth Certificate: 1908-38648
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1974-MN-020579
    • Occupation: Salesman, electric signs, Housepainter

    Notes:

Birth certificate says “Hendricksen” with no first name.

Arthur was employed as a salesman for the Federal Electric Co. at the time of Joyce’s birth. At that time, the family was living at 4104 13th Avenue S.

At the time of the 1930 census, Arthur, 22, and his wife Gertrude, 21, and their daughter Joyce, 1-1/2, were living in a house they owned (worth $4300), at 3545 44th Avenue South in Minneapolis.

In the 1940 census, Arthur and his three youngest children were living with his widowed mother at 4032 11th Avenue S. Included in the household as a “lodger” was 42 year-old Anna Petrin. Arthur Sr. was a salesman for an advertising company. Anna Petrin was a machine operator at an underwear factory. Arthur was a high school graduate. Anna Petrin had had three years of high school. Martha had an eighth-grade education. Martha, Arthur, Barbara, and Art Jr. had lived in that same house in 1935. Because Arthur and Barbara and Art Jr. had lived with Martha at 4032 11th in April of 1935, even before Patsy was born, Gertie was probably living with Martha and Charles also in 1935.

Here's a timeline of Arthur and Gert:

1928: In the Minneapolis city directory, Arthur lives at 4032 11th Avenue S, his parents' home, and is a salesman for Federal Electric.

February, 1928: Arthur and Gertrude marry in Duluth.

December, 1928: Joyce, Arthur and Gertrude's first child is born in Minneapolis. According to Joyce's birth certificate, Arthur and Gertrude live at 4104 13th Avenue S. at the time. Arthur is a salesman for Federal Electric.

1929 In the city directory, Arthur lives at 4104 13th Avenue S. Still a salesman for Federal Electric.

1930: In the city directory, Arthur lives at 3545 44th Avenue S. Still a salesman for Federal Electric.

April, 1930: In the 1930 census, Arthur, Gertrude, and Joyce live at 3545 44th Avenue in south Minneapolis. Arthur is a salesman of electric signs.

December, 1930: Barbara, Arthur and Gertrude's second child is born in Minneapolis.

1932: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 4032 11th Avenue S (his parents' home). He is a manager for Twin City Sign Studios.

October, 1932: Art Jr., Arthur and Gertrude's third child is born in Minneapolis. The Hendricksons live at 4032 11th Avenue S.

1934: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 2501 17th Avenue S. Arthur is a sign painter.

Summer, 1934 (approx): Joyce Hendrickson, age 6-1/2, is struck by a car and is seriously hurt.

Late February, 1935: Gertrude becomes pregnant with Patsy.

April, 1935 (if we believe the 1940 census): Arthur and Art Jr. and Barbara (and, presumably, Joyce and Gertrude) live at his parents' home, 4032 11th Avenue S.

    September, 1935: Arthur's father dies.

November 24, 1935: Patsy is born in Minneapolis. Arthur and Gert live at 114 W. 33rd Street.

1936: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 114 West 33rd Street. Arthur is a salesman.

March, 1937: Joyce is institutionalized at the Cambridge State Hospital. According to her death certificate, her residence at the time she was institutionalized was 114 West 33rd Street.

1937: In the city directory, Arthur and Gertrude live at 114 West 33rd Street. Arthur is a salesman for Pioneer Neon Co.

1938: In the city directory, Arthur (no wife mentioned) lives at 4032 11th Avenue S, his mother's house. He is a salesman for Pioneer Neon Co.

August, 1938: Gertrude marries Robert Marshall in Duluth. He is 23, she is 28.

1939: In the city directory, Arthur lives at his mother's house. He is a salesman.

January, 1939: Gertrude and Robert have their first child, Robert, born in Duluth.

1940: In the city directory, Arthur lives at his mother's house. He is an artist.

April, 1940: In the 1940 census, Arthur and his three youngest children, plus Anna Petrin, live at his mother's house. Arthur is a salesman for an advertising company.

April, 1940: In the 1940 census, Gertrude and Robert, and their son Robert, live in Duluth.

1941: In the city directory, Arthur, a sign painter, lives at 4032 11th.

After that, Arthur is no longer in the Minneapolis city directory.

In the 1950 census, Arthur and his wife Anna and Arthur’s children Arthur C, 17, and Patricia, 14, live in South Harbor in Mille Lacs County. Arthur is an interior decorator in the painting business.

  1. 4.  Karsten Henrik (Charles) HENDRICKSONKarsten Henrik (Charles) HENDRICKSON was born on 22 May 1855 in Stensoya (Stone Island), Rørvik, Østfold, Norway; was christened in Lækø, Leka, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway (son of Henrik HANSEN and Ane Kristine SENDRESEN); died on 6 Sep 1935 in Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 9 Sep 1935 in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1935-MN-021371
    • Occupation: Machinist, stationary engineer

    Notes:

Emigrated from Norway in 1872 and first settled in Wisconsin. Sometime between 1872 and 1880 he had moved to Minneapolis where he married Mari Eriksen, who may have lived in Wisconsin also.

Charles was born to Henrik Hansen and Anna Christine Sendresen on an island close to Rorvik, Norway called Stone Island or Stensoya in a group of islands called Risvaersund.  Karsten Henrik Henriksen came to the U.S. in 1872 and first settled in Wisconsin. Sometime between 1872 and 1880 he had moved to Minneapolis where he married Mari Eirksen, who may have lived in Wisconsin also.

Charles was a machinist for the Butler Manufacturing Co. for many years until 1922. In 1922, he joined his son Edgar in the Twin City Chandelier Manufacturing Co. In 1923-1925, and perhaps beyond, Charles was a fireman for the Strutwear Knitting Co.

Charles’s address at the time of the 1890-91 Minneapolis city directory was 2630 13th Avenue South. His occupation was fireman at Washburn C Mill.

In the 1885 Minnesota state census, he is Charley Hendrickson living in the 12th Ward of Minneapolis. The household consists of Charley, 30, Mary, 26, Henry, 0, and Charley Peterson, 25, probably a boarder. Everyone but Henry was born in Norway.

In the 1895 state census, he and his family live at 2630 13th Avenue S. Charles is an engineer and has lived at the present address for 8 years and been in Minnesota for 14 years. No wife is listed so Mary has died by this time. Edwin is still living with the family. There seems to be a “domestic” living with them named Anna Wang, age 32.

Charles and family were still living at 2630 13th Ave S. in Minneapolis at the time of the 1900 census (he was a widower by then). Charles is a stationary fireman. In that census, Edwin is not listed with the rest of Charles’s sons.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, the family is still living at 2630 13th Avenue S. Living with them are Ines M. Jensen, 27, and her daughter (apparently) Elna, 2, and Hulda Carlson, 49, and (perhaps her mother) Annie Carlson, 90. The Jensens were born in Denmark and had been in Minnesota for 1 month. The Carlsons were born in Sweden and had been in Minnesota for 32 years. Ines Jensen was a domestic, Hulda Carlson was a dressmaker. Charles was a blacksmith, Henry was a day laborer, and George was a skilled mechanic. Edwin was not living with the family.

The 1909 Minneapolis city directory shows him living at 2630 13th Avenue South, occupation “oiler.”

Charles lived at 2630 13th Avenue S until about 1913 when they moved to 4036 11th Ave. S. In 1917, they moved to 4032 11th Ave. S. (which may be the same house). All of the lots on the west side of 11th between 40th and 41st Streets are empty in the 1914 Minneapolis plat book. Thus, Charles was probably the first owner of 4032 11th. The confusion about the correct house number probably arose because there would have been several empty lots on either side of Charles’s house when they first moved in. Although there is a house at 4036, Charles’s house was probably the one at 4032, the address that seems to have been settled on.

    Charles’s obituary appeared in the Saturday, September 7th edition of the Minneapolis Tribune: “Charles Hendrickson, 81, a resident of Minneapolis for 56 years, died at St. Barnabas Hospital. His home was at 4032 11th Avenue S. Mr. Hendrickson was born in Namdalen, Norway. He is survived by his wife, seven sons, Henry, George, Theodore, Carson, Adolph, Edwin, and Arthur, a daughter, Mrs. Frank W. {sic} Carter, a brother, Christ Hansen of Minneapolis, four brothers and three sisters in Norway, 20 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be Monday at 3 PM at the Enger Funeral Home, Grant Street and Park Avenue. Burial at Crystal Lake Cemetery.” {We don’t know who that great-grandchild was.}

    Birth:
The Luster bygdebok, in its record of Kari’s children, says that Charles was born in Namdalen in Nord-Trøndelag. That agrees with the birthplace designation of Rørvik.

    Buried:
    Cora and Maurice attended funeral

Karsten married Martha BOWE on 10 May 1907 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Martha (daughter of Claus Sjursen BØE (BOWE) and Kari Andersdatter MAREIM) was born in Dec 1871 in Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin; died on 25 Jun 1943 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 28 Jun 1943 in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Martha BOWEMartha BOWE was born in Dec 1871 in Franklin Twp, Vernon County, Wisconsin (daughter of Claus Sjursen BØE (BOWE) and Kari Andersdatter MAREIM); died on 25 Jun 1943 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 28 Jun 1943 in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1943-MN-020813

    Notes:

Beth’s research says Martha’s birthdate was December, 1870.

Martha is shown in the 1891 La Crosse city directory as “Miss Martha Bowe, domestic.” It lists a succession of addresses. The one in print is “13th betw Main and King.” Two later addresses, entered by hand, are 303 N. 8th and 118 S. 11th. Martha is still listed as a domestic in the 1893 city directory, now at 812 Cass.

Divorced her first husband, with whom Cora says she had a son, then married Hendrickson. Cora remembers the divorce as "a disgrace." Because she had nowhere else to go, Martha moved back home to the farm and Anna, Charly, and Cora moved out for a year. Cora remembers Martha as "a bossy woman, and her boy {Georgie} was wild and noisy." Nevertheless, Martha later moved to Minneapolis and was the means by which Cora ended up meeting and marrying Maurice. (See notes under Cora.)

In the 1900 census, Martha and her first 1st husband lived in Barre, La Crosse County, in a house that they rented. Gabriel is shown as a farm laborer and had been unemployed for three of the previous 12 months. Martha is shown as having borne two children, one still living. Gabriel, Martha, and George are shown as having been born in Wisconsin; Gabriel’s and Martha’s parents were born in Norway.

In the 1905 state census, the family is still in Barre, La Crosse County. Gabriel is 34 and a farm laborer, Martha is 32, and George is 7. They live on a farm that they are renting. Living with them is a 54 year-old boarder named Elisa Olson, who is married.

At the time of the 1910 census (April 27th), Martha and her 2nd husband, Charles Hendrickson, were living at 2630 13th Ave. S. in Minneapolis in a house they owned. (This is the house that we have a picture of as “Aunt Martha’s house.”) The family consisted of Charles, 56, Martha, 40, Charles’s twin sons Carlson and Edgar O., 19, another of Charles’s sons whose name is illegible (may be Adolph), 17, Arthur C., 2, and step-son George Markson (or Markuson?), 12. George and Martha were born in Wisconsin, Charles in Norway, and everyone else in Minnesota. Charles’s occupation is blacksmith at some type (illegible) of shop. Edgar O. is a pipefitter at a hardware company. Carlson is a helper at a tile company. The illegible one is a laborer. Martha and Charles had been married three years. Martha is shown as having had three children, two living.

Martha and her 2nd husband, Charles Hendrickson, were visited by the 1920 census enumerator in January, 1920, when the family lived at 4032 11th Avenue.

They were still at that same location at the time of the 1930 census. The home was valued at $4500 and Charles and Martha owned it. They had a radio. The household consisted of Charles C., 77, his wife Martha, 57, their daughter Myrtle H. Carter, 20, their son-in-law Frank N. Carter, 23, and their grandson Frank N., 1-1/2. Charles is a stationary engineer at a knitting mill, Frank is a clerk at a railroad office. Neither man is a veteran. Martha is shown as first married at age 30.

In the 1940 census, Martha was a widow living at 4032 11th Avenue S. with her son, her son’s three children, and a “lodger” named Anna Petrin.

Death certificate 1943-MN-020813 was issued in Hennepin County for a “Martha Hendrickson” with a date of death of June 25, 1943.

Martha’s obituary appeared in the Sunday, June 27th edition of the Minneapolis Tribune. It said that she died on Friday, June 25th, at her home at 4032 11th Avenue South. She was survived by Mrs. Frank N. Carter of Minneapolis, George M. of St. Cloud, Arthur C. of Minneapolis, 5 grandchildren, and 3 sisters. She was a member of Alfheim Lodge #43. Services were to be on Monday, June 28th, at 1 PM at the Enger Funeral Home with interment at Lakewood.

Her daughter Myrtle was the informant for her mother’s death certificate. Martha died from colon cancer. Her residence at the time of her death was 4032 11th Avenue.

Ole and Ella were married in a Lutheran ceremony witnessed by Olaus Nyseth and Gusta Nyseth. Ole’s occupation is listed as printer and his residence as La Crosse.

Worked for a newspaper in LaCrosse and in Duluth. Cora says his family is still in Duluth (or was in the early 1980s). He had "quite a few kids."

Cora said that she'd met two of the daughters, “Mariam” and Gertie, and that "they were nice."

Census enumerator Charles Engelstad visited Christiana and Ole on June 5th, 1900, when the two were living on 9th street (or 8th street: it is the last entry for 9th street) (but Cora said it was a corner lot) in the 17th ward of the city of La Crosse. In the census form, Christiana’s and Ole’s birthdates are confirmed as March, 1838, and January, 1874, respectively. Ole is shown as single with “printer” as his occupation. He is shown as having been unemployed zero months in the past year. Ole is shown as having been born in Wisconsin; Christiana as having been born in Norway. Both could read, write, and speak English.

Ole is shown as a clerk, and living at home, in the 1893-94 La Crosse city directory. In the 1895-96 city directory, and in the 1897 city directory (as O. C. Jr.), Ole’s occupation is “comp Daily Press.” In the 1900 city directory, O C Anderson Jr is “comp Press” and resides at 603 S 8th with his mother, Mrs. Christiana Anderson. The 1901-02 city directory lists him as a printer and still living at home with his mother. The 1905-06 directory lists him as a machinist for the “Leader & P.”

In the 1905 Wisconsin state census, he and his family are living in the 17th ward of La Crosse, not far from his mother. Also nearby, apparently, is the St. Anna Orphan House. The family consists of Ole C. Anderson, 31, a printer, Eda C., 22, his wife, and Herbert C., 1. Ole is a printer and he rents his home.

Registered for the draft in Duluth on September 10, 1918, as Ole Christian Anderson. Living at 2108 West Superior Street. He was a linotype operator with the Duluth Herald. His employer was A.C. Weiss. He listed his nearest relative as Ella Anderson, his wife. He was tall, of slender build, with blue eyes and “grayish” hair.

In an obituary for his mother, Ole Jr. is indicated as still living in La Crosse at the time of his mother’s death. Apparently Ole C. didn’t stay too long in La Crosse after his mother died. In the 1905-06 city directory, Ole and his family were first listed, in print, as living at the rear of 941 Market Street. Then, in successive handwritten revisions, the addresses are 603 S. 8th, 925 Ferry, and, finally, 2106 W. Superior, Flat 3, in Duluth.

Living in Duluth at the time of the 1910 census at a house they rented at 2106 West Superior Street. The household consists of Ole C., 35, Ella C., 26, Herbert C., 6, and Marion C., 4. Ole and Ella had been married for 7 years and she had had two children, both still living. Ole is a printer for the newspaper.

Ole C. Anderson is listed in the 1910 Duluth city directory as a lino operator for the Duluth Herald residing at 2108 W. Superior. The 1915 entry is similar except that Ole’s occupation is listed as “comp” for the Herald.

The 1917 Duluth city directory records Olaf C., comp Dul Herald, r. 2108 West Superior.

He registered for the draft at the Sloan Building in Duluth on September 10, 1918, as Ole Christian Anderson. His address was 2108 West Superior Street in Duluth. His nearest relative was Ella Anderson of the same address. He was a linotype operator for the Duluth Herald and the name of his employer was A.C. Weiss. He was described as tall and slender with blue eyes and “grayish” hair.

Living in Duluth at the time of the 1920 census (January 10th) at 2106 West Superior Street, near 21st West. Shown as age 44 which is inconsistent with the birthdate information we have. All children were still at home.

In the 1930 census (indexed as Anderosn), the family is still at 2108 Superior Street in Duluth. Gertrude has left home but the other children are still single and listed at home with their parents although Herbert is designated “AB” for absent. Ole is still a typesetter at a newspaper.

In the 1936 Duluth city directory, he is Ole C Anderson, a lino operator for the Herald Co. He and his wife Ella C live at 119 N 26th Avenue West.

His death certificate puts his last address as 2530 West 2nd Street in Duluth. The informant for the information on his death certificate was Walter Johnson. Ole was still married to Ella when he died. He was a linotype operator for a newspaper. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage brought about by hypertension.

Ole married Ella Kristine NORDRUM on 10 Aug 1903 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Ella (daughter of Hans G NORDRUM and Marie Amelia JOHNSON) was born on 28 Apr 1883 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin; died on 31 Jan 1971 in St. Louis County, Minnesota; was buried on 3 Feb 1971 in Bethany Cemetery, Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. Both parents born in Norway.

An Ella Nordrum was listed in the 1895 state census as living in LaCrosse as female, born in the U.S. No other Nordrums are listed in LaCrosse. She seems to be living with Antona Hanson but that isn’t clear: it’s simply the name that comes before hers in the census listing.

Apparently caught twice in the 1900 census. Once as a lodger at 222 King Street and once as a servant for the John Rowles family at 214 North 6th Street.

In the 1901-1902 La Crosse city directory she is Miss Ella Nordrum, domestic, 415 S 5th.

Shown as Ella C. in the 1910 census.

In the 1940 census, she was a 56 year-old widow living with her daughter Marion and her family. Ella had a sixth-grade education.

Of Duluth at the time of her daughter Marion’s death.

Died as Ella Christine. According to her obituary in the Duluth newspaper, she died at home at 306 Worth Street in Duluth. (Her death certificate says she died at 4:40 PM at the Chris Jensen Home in Duluth.) She had been a Duluth resident for 80 years. No mention is made in her obituary of her husband. She had 21 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

Her cause of death was cancer of the uterus.

Her last name inferred from the death certificates of Gertrude and Marion. Confirmed by the La Crosse birth record. Ella was delivered by a Mrs. Mary Olson, presumably a midwife.

Appears from IGI to have had a brother Arthur born May 9, 1887, in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This seems unlikely.

    Notes:

His parents’ names and his birth, baptism, and confirmation dates confirmed by the confirmation record in the Voss church book.

Shown as Clouse Bowe on his gravestone.

The database Digitalarkivet: Migrants from Voss 1837-1864 shows that Claus Sjursen Boe left home on July 5, 1849, for “Christiania for at indtræde i Guldsmedlære.” This probably means that Claus originally intended to be a goldsmith or jeweler and may have begun an apprenticeship in Oslo.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Claus Sjursen, shoemaker, born in Wos in 1830, a husfader on the Svigum domicile in Hafslo, living with his wife, two daughters, Susanna and Anna, and stepson Anders Larsen.

In Susanna’s baptism record in Digitalarkivit, Claus’s farm is shown as “Bøe fra Voss.” In Anna’s baptism record, Claus’s farm is shown as Bøe. In Sever’s baptism record, Claus Sjursen Bøe’s farm is shown as Sviggum. The Luster bygdebok describes Claus as “frå Bø på Voss.”

An incorrect family tradition has Claus and Carrie emigrating to the US from Norway in 1862 and settling in Liberty Pole, WI. Their Viroqua homestead was supposedly applied for on May 20, 1862, and approved on June 15, 1874. Although the 1862 date is wrong because Claus and his family were still in Norway at that time, the 1874 date is correct as confirmed by the land patent on the Bureau of Land Management’s General Land Office web site. The homestead papers were signed by President U S Grant on June 15, 1874.

The Bowe farm was Box 22, Wisconsin Route 3 in Franklin Township, Vernon County.

Claus declared his intention to become a citizen of the U.S. in Vernon County (still known as Bad Ax County at the time). This was recorded September 30, 1868, and the hearing, order, and filing was completed December 9, 1873.

Claus and his family were recorded in the 1870 census which took place on July 8th. At that time they were living in Vernon County with the post office shown as New Brookville. The family was Clouse, 38, Carrie, 26 (sic), Susan, 10, Ann, 6, Severt, 4, and Betsey, 2. (No Andrew! No Nels.) Everyone is shown as born in Norway except Betsey who is shown as born in Wisconsin. If Bertha (“Betsey”) was indeed born in Wisconsin, then the family must have been in Wisconsin in 1867.

In the 1870 census, the value of Claus’s real estate is shown as $400 and the value of his personal estate is $200. This is an order of magnitude less than some his neighbors but is more than a few others shown on the same census page.

The history of the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church indicates that "Klaus Boe" settled in the area in the time period 1859-1862. This is too early and is probably a continuation of the false family legend.

Claus moved in with Louise after Carrie died.

Claus died intestate so a judicial process to certify descent was carried out (probated) on April 22, 1919, in the Vernon County court. Claus’s property was identified to be the west half of the SE quarter of section 27 so Claus must have sold the NE quarter of the SE quarter (which had been part of his original homestead) before he died. The court order declared that a one-sixth undivided share of the property was to go to: Louise Larson, Anna Anderson, Susanna Ekum, Betha Nundahl, Martha Hendrickson of Minneapolis, and Sever Bowe. The ownership and descendants were verified by the testimony of N. H. Sviggum. (For some reason, this name was whited-out in the court document. It took some effort to discern the name.)

Dorothy's family stories say that Claus "homesteaded a farm in what is now called Black Bottom in Vernon County." This is between Viroqua and Readstown.

"He came from Norway where he had been trained as a shoemaker and started a shoe shop in Liberty Pole (southwest of Viroqua) until he got his land. There he dug a hole in a bluff and lived in it with his family until he got his home built. This hole was later used as a root cellar and still remains on the farm."

The 1875 Wisconsin state census records, for Clouse Bowe, 5 males and 6 females. These 11 people may have been: Claus, Nels, Anders, Sever, and Albert, and Kari, Susan, Anna, Bertha, Martha, and Louise. If not Nels, the extra male could be that unknown boy who Louise remembers as a brother who ran away.

Census-taker O.K. Fortney visited the Bowe farm in Franklin Township, Vernon County, on June 12, 1880, and found Claus, age 47, Kari, age 46, Andrew, age 18, Ana, age 17, Sever, age 14, Bertha, age 11, Martha, age 8, Louisa, age 3, and Albertina, age 3. Kari was indicated as “cannot write.” Andrew, Ana, and Sever were indicated as having been born in Norway; the younger children were indicated as having been born in Wisconsin. Andrew, Ana, Sever, and Martha (but not Bertha) were indicated as having attended school within the census year.

Census-taker Torge Berge visited the Bowe farm on June 13, 1900. The family consisted of Claus, 67 (born in June 1833), Carrie, 66 (born in Sept 1833), Sever, 34 (born May 1866), Louisa, 22 (born April 1878), Nils, step-son, widower, 46 (born Sep 1853), Andrew, adopted son, 37 (born Sep 1862), Susanna Monson, married, 39 (born December 1860), Martin, 10 (born March 1890), Clara, 7 (born May 1893), and Rhody, 4 (born May 1896). Louisa and Susan’s kids are shown as born in Wisconsin, everyone else was born in Norway. Claus, Carrie, Sever, Nils, Andrew, and Susanna emigrated in 1867. Carrie is shown as having borne 10 children, 7 still living. Susanna is shown as having borne 8 children, 5 still living.

Susan’s husband Thomas “Munston”, along with their son Albert and daughter Caroline (“Carrie”), are in Butte Township, Siskiyou County, California at the time (June 12) of the 1900 census. Thomas doesn’t have an occupation shown but Albert is already working in a box factory and Carrie is in school.

Census-taker Frank Munyon visited the Bowe/Anderson farm on May 6-7, 1910, and found Clause, age 77, widowed, Sever, age 44, and Bertha Oren, 18, servant. Next door to them, on a separate listing, is Charley C. Anderson, age 42, Anna, age 43, and Cora C., age 14. Clause, Sever, and Anna are shown as coming to the U.S. in 1867, Charley in 1868, and Bertha Oren (later to marry cousin Albert) in 1909. Clause is shown as owning his farm free and clear. Charley is shown as owning his farm with a mortgage. Clause is shown as having his “own income”, Sever and Charley are farmers, and Bertha is a house work servant. Sever and Bertha are shown as employees (presumably both by Clause) and Charley is shown as working on own account. All speak English except Bertha who only speaks Norwegian. All six are able to able to read but Anna is shown as not being able to write. Cora is shown as having attended school in the period since Sept. 1, 1909. Charley and Anna are shown as having been married 15 years and Anna is shown as having borne one child, still living.

The Wisconsin Deaths data base on Ancestry.com shows the deaths of Louise Bowe on 12 Dec 1876 and Albert Bowe died three days earlier. These are the only Bowe deaths listed for Vernon County; the database extends only up through 1907. (Albertina Bowe is not listed.) These two children died of scarlet fever while Kari was pregnant with her twins. It seems a good guess the 1877 twins, Louise and Albertina, were named after their dead siblings. Similarly, it seems a good guess that Albert Ekum was named after Albertina who may have died at about the time that Albert was born.

The IGI shows that the Claus Sjursen, the son of Sjur Nielsen, married Susanna Kristoffersdatter on 18 August 1857 in Luster, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. This woman’s father was Kristoffer Andersen. The IGI records for this are:

    Batch No.: M423033
    Dates:  1841 - 1859
    Source Call No.:  0278148
    Type:  Film
    Printout Call No.: NONE

    Sheet:  00

This Susanna was born 5 Jun 1827 and christened 24 Jun 1827 in Luster. Her parents were Christopher Andersen and Kisti Olsdatter.

The Luster church book shows Klaus Sjursen Böe, unmarried shoemaker, b. 1 Jun 1833, arriving in Luster in May of 1857. He was coming from the Hadsel farm in Vos to the Landvig farm.

The Sogn og Fjordane flytting records show Clause Bowe leaving the Luster parish and going to the Hafslo parish with the following comments: “'Bo af Vos' innflyttar til Luster, som flytte til Hafslo. Att. 17/1-61.” The “aar hendling” for that record is 1858. This may mean that Claus joined the Luster parish in 1858 and left it in 1861.

The Digitalarkivet database for marriages in Hafslo shows that Claus Sjursen Boe, an Enkermand (widower), Skomager, married Kari Andersdatter Mareim, pige, on March 27, 1861 in Fedt in Haflso. Bride and groom were each 27.5 years old. Bride’s father’s name was Anders Andersen Mareim.

The Digitalarkivet database for Sogn og Fjordane flytting shows Claus Bø of Sviggum, a shoemaker born in 1833, leaving Hafslo for “Amerika” on April 9, 1867. Thirty people left Hafslo that day for Amerika. Accompanying Claus, all of Sviggum, were his wife, Kari Melheim, and children, all with surname Bø, Susanne, born 1860, Anna, born 1863, Sjur, born 1866, and Anders, born 1862. Kari’s son, Nils Pedersen, “dreng”, born 1854, left Hafslo for Amerika at the same time. Also leaving Hafslo for Amerika on April 9, 1867, were Anders Andersen of Mareim (Kari’s brother), born 1840, unmarried, no occupation shown.

The family departed from Bergen, bound for Quebec, on the frigate Roska, under a Capt. P. A. Stoesen. This ship departed Bergen on April 25th and arrived in Quebec on May 31st (Stoesen’s manifest is dated the 30th). A total of about 341 people (including 292 adults) were on board this ship and one man and one young girl died during the passage. Some others of the 30 people who left Hafslo on April 9th were also on the Roska.

Two days ahead of the Roska was the frigate Claus Hefty, under a Capt. Andersen Jr., which departed Bergen on April 23rd and arrived in Quebec on May 28. Niels Sjursen Ekum, 50, his wife Ragnhilde Ekum, 48, both of Haflso, and Thomas Monsen Ekum, 17, of Lyster, were on that boat as were many other ex-residents of Hafslo and Lyster.

In the 1885 Wisconsin census, the “Clouse Bowe” household consisted of 4 males and 6 females. Of these 10, 5 were born in the U.S. and 5 in Scandinavia. Eight of those people probably were: Sever, Claus, and Andrew; and Louise, Bertha, Martha, Kari, and Anna. But that leaves a boy and a girl born in the U.S. which suggests that Albertina was still alive and that there was another boy, born in the U.S., living with the Bowes. Could that boy be the one who Louise remembers ran away? Could that boy be one of Anders Anderson’s children?

In the 1895 Wisconsin census, the household consisted of 4 males and 4 females, of which 2 were born in the U.S. and 6 in Scandinavia. Those people probably were: Sever, Claus, Andrew, and Nels; and Louise, Bertha, Kari, and Anna. By this reasoning, Martha must have been married and gone and Albertina must have died.

In the 1905 Wisconsin census, the household consisted of Clouse, 72, Carrie, 71, Nels, 50, Andrew, 42, and Sever, 40. All three of the younger men are shown as “son.” Nels is shown as a widower. Also living in the household were Chas Anderson, 39, son-in-law, Anna Anderson, 43, daughter, and Cora Anderson, 9, niece.

In the index to the 1896 Vernon County plat book, Claus’s property is described as Franklin 12 Sec 27 R4. Claus is listed as a “patron” of the 1896 plat book and his business is referred to in the Patrons’ Directory as the “Bowe Stock, Grain and Tobacco Farm”, Liberty Pole. In that 1896 plat book, Claus’s property is still the original 120 acre homestead in the SE corner (all but the SE 40 which was owned by O.B. Fortney) of Section 27 of Franklin Twp. The property is shown on the plat book map as “Bowe Stock & Tobacco Farm.”

Also in the 1896 plat book, two 40s adjacent to Claus’s farm on the west and southwest seem to be collectively owned by Andrew and Sever Bowe. In the plat book, this 80 is shown as owned by “A.S. Bowe.” The two 40s are 1) the SE quarter of the SW quarter of Section 27, and 2) the NE quarter of the NW quarter of Section 34.

In the 1915 plat book, Charley Anderson owns 45 (42 in the Farmers’ Directory) acres of that northeast leg of Claus’s original homestead (apparently all of the original homestead east of the road) and Sever Bowe owns the remaining 75 acres of the original homestead plus the northern 40 of the 80 that he and Andrew apparently owned in the 1896 plat book. That gave Sever a contiguous 115 acres (120 in the Farmers’ Directory). In the 1915 plat book, the southern 40 of Andrew and Sever’s 80 is now owned by Sever Nundahl. Andrew Sherry is the owner of that other 40 next to the Bowe property (the SE quarter of the SE quarter which was owned by O.B. Fortney in the 1896 plat book).

Claus died intestate and his estate wasn’t settled until April of 1919 when his 80 acres (West half of the SE quarter of Sec 27, Twp 12 N, range 4 west) were divided equally among his six children: Susanna Ekum, Anna Anderson, Bertha Nundahl, Martha Hendrickson, Sever Bowe, and Louise Larson.

  5. 12.  Ole Christian Anderson FLØTTUM was born on 11 Mar 1834 in Aflangrud, Næs, Hedmark, Norway (son of Anders Eriksen /AFLANGRÜD FLØTTUM and Johanne Johnsdatter); died on 25 Nov 1898 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin; was buried on 27 Nov 1898 in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Dairy farmer in the U.S., Jordarbejder in Norway
    • Baptism: 13 Jul 1834, Næs, Hedmark, Norway
    • Confirmation: 6 Oct 1850, Næs, Hedmark, Norway

    Notes:

His name in Norway was Ole Andersen Aflangerud.

In a book that Kristiane had, Ole’s middle initial is C.

His birth record is for, simply, Ole Anderssen. Among the people whose names are identifiable as baptismal sponsors: Magrethe Ericksdatter Heggen, Amünd Anderssen Lünds, Karie Ericksdatter, unmarried, Sÿver Erickssen Engesoüg, and Sÿver Pedersson whose farm name may be Gagnamdan.

There is a comment that I am unable to translate in his confirmation record.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Ole Andersen, born in 1834 and living in or on the Orderholdt domicile in Næs, Hedmark, in the Helgeøen school district. Ole’s occupation in Jordarbejder (farm worker or field laborer). The household doesn’t have much, only 10 units of potatoes. Included in the household is Ole Anderssen, 32, born in Næs, Kristiane Kristiansdatter, 28, his wife, born in Toten vestre, and “his daughter” Anne Marie Olsdatter, 12, born in Næs.

The bygdebøk says “Ole Andersen Fløttum, f. 1834, var jordarbeider og bodde her i 1865.”

Ole (33) and Christiana (29) supposedly, according to Cora, emigrated to the US from Norway in October of 1867 with one child, Carl (6 months). This conflicts with the 1900 census entry for Charlie which indicated the year of immigration as 1869. In Kristiane’s obituaries, she is claimed to have come to the U.S. in 1870. Could not find the emigration entry for them in the parish record.

A declaration for an Ole Anderson to become a citizen was declared in La Crosse County and so recorded on October 31, 1865. The hearing, order, and filing of his citizenship was on June 12, 1872. Another entry for an Ole Anderson, perhaps more likely to be our Ole, was a declaration on February 3, 1874, and the hearing, order, and filing on October 30, 1878.

In the 1870 census, the Andersons were living in the 2nd ward in LaCrosse. The family is Ole, 37, Christiana, 32, Carl, 3, and daughter Jennie, 5 months. Ole’s occupation is shown as “laborer.” Jennie is shown as born in Wisconsin, the others in Norway.

In the 1880 census, shown as living in 3rd ward, LaCrosse, occupation “peddler”, age 47. Wife, Christina, age 42, “keeping house.” Sons Carl, age 13, and Ole, age 6. Only Ole was born in Wisconsin. The other three are shown as born in Norway, and everyone’s parents are shown as born in Norway.

Lived at 609 South 8th Street in LaCrosse. {No, 603 S. 8th Street; 609 was next door.} “He bought the big lot on [the] corner [and] built [the] house in front on [the] street [and] built [the] barn for his cows on [the] back of [the] lot, next to [the] alley [, and] took his cows to graze on [the] farm [a] short ways from his house outside town."

Cora says that she, Ron, and I saw the place when we drove down to LaCrosse in the mid-1960s. At the time, she recalls, the house had been moved to the side and a new one built in front. The old house had had a big part torn off of it and so wasn't as large as it had been in Cora's day. She also recalled the lot being bigger than the one we saw.

    {Cora’s recollections may not be correct. The house as I saw it in 2004 looked to be the same size and shape as the one drawn in the La Crosse fire insurance maps for the late 1800s or early 1900s.}

In the 1884 La Crosse city directory, he is Ole Anderson, milkman, res 603 S 8th. Ole is shown as “retired” in the 1890 city directory but as a laborer in the 1893-4 city directory. He is shown as “retired” again in the 1895-96 city directory and in the 1897 city directory.

His death and burial are recorded in the records of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Incorrectly shown as age 56 at death.

Ole married Kristiane Kristiansdatter on 14 Apr 1863 in Næs, Hedmark, Norway. Kristiane (daughter of Christian Christiansen SKOGSTAD and Karen Olsdatter) was born on 23 Mar 1838 in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway; died on 12 Apr 1906 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin; was buried on 15 Apr 1906 in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin. 6. 13.  Kristiane Kristiansdatter was born on 23 Mar 1838 in Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway (daughter of Christian Christiansen SKOGSTAD and Karen Olsdatter); died on 12 Apr 1906 in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin; was buried on 15 Apr 1906 in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 16 Apr 1838, Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway
    • Confirmation: 3 Oct 1852, Vestre Toten, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

She was born Christiana according to the birth record in the church book. Her birth farm seems to be Fjeldstadhagen. Her confirmation record (as 14-1/2 year-old Christiane Christiansdatter, residence farm name starts with Gr) shows her birth farm as Fjelstad.

Her farm name in the marriage record seems to be Ianmark. She was 25 years old.

Shown in the 1865 Norwegian census as Kristiane Kristiansdatter, born in 1838 in Toten vestre. Sources that say that she was born in Aflangrud are incorrect. She is shown as born in Vestre Toten in the entry in the Ness parish record for her marriage to Ole.

    Supposedly a singer in Oslo.

According to Cora, "not a well person as she had asthma."

Cora says, "she was very well liked, had a lot of friends, belonged to the Norwegian Lutheran Church in LaCrosse. Her funeral was so big [and] had so many flowers. I haven't seen so many flowers at a funeral (until Maurice's). In those days they had special built carriages for choirs, etc. It impressed me so I will never forget it."

An article in the April 13th La Crosse newspaper called her Christina Anderson. She died in the afternoon at her home, 603 South Eighth Street, “after long suffering with bronchial asthma.” The article said that she came to La Crosse in 1870.

    According to the article in the La Crosse Chronicle on Saturday, April 14, 1906, the funeral (for “Christine Anderson”) was held on Sunday, April 15, 1906, “at 2 o’clock from the residence, 603 South Eighth Street and at 2:30 o’clock from the Norwegian Lutheran church, corner West Avenue and Ferry streets. The Rev. R. Anderson will officiate and interment will be made in Oak Grove cemetery. {This church was St. Paul’s Norwegian Lutheran Church, identified in the city directory as being at the corner of West Avenue and Division Street.}

“Carl Anderson, a son, of Viroqua, and Carl Skogstad, a brother, of Grand Meadow, Minn., are in the city and will remain to attend the funeral.”

The Friday edition of the La Crosse Chronicle referred to her as Mrs. Christina Anderson and mentions that her son Ole C. is living in La Crosse (“of this city”).

From the La Crosse city directories of the time, as well as the 1906 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map, the church on the NW corner of West and Ferry was called (and still is called) the English Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. The nearest church to the Andersons that was identified as a Norwegian Lutheran Church was on the SE corner of 6th and Division. The nearest church to the Andersons was then a German Methodist church (it’s still standing but its denomination has changed) a block away at Ferry and 7th.

Christiana had relatives in Grand Meadow, MN, by the name of Jorgens and Skogstad. Cora met some of them at her grandmother's funeral. The cemetery records list her as Christiana (Skogstad) Anderson.

Christiana is shown as owning her house, free and clear without mortgage. The census enumerator apparently started to write “37” for years married for Christiana before, apparently, realizing that Christiana was a widow. Christiana’s year of immigration is confirmed on the census form as 1867 and “32” is indicated for her as her number of years in the United States.

Most interestingly, Christiana is shown as having had had six children, only two living.

In the 1900 city directory, she is Mrs Christiana Anderson, widow of Ole, living at 604 S 8th Street. Listed in the 1901-02 and 1905-06 La Crosse city directories as “Mrs. Christina, widow of Ole.” The 1907 city directory points out that “Anderson, Christian” died on April 12, 1906.

In the 1905 Wisconsin state census, she is living in the 17th ward of La Crosse, not far from her son Ole and his family. Also nearby, apparently, is the St. Anna Orphan House. She is shown as Christina, 67, a widow, and her occupation appeares to be “landlady.”

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Laborer according to Ella’s birth record

    Notes:

In the 1888-1889 La Crosse city directory, Hans Nordrum is a laborer and resides at 412 Jackson.

In the 1901-1902 city directory, Hans Nordrum “wks Dr Christensen” and rooms at 119 S Ninth.

In the 1910 census, he may be the 52 year-old widower “working out” as a farm laborer in Scranton Twp, Bowman County, North Dakota.

La Crosse Tribune, November 25, 1918:

Hans Nordrum, a former resident of La Crosse, died at Scranton, N.D., Friday, at the age of 68 years. Surviving are three children, Mrs. O.C. Anderson of Duluth, Gustave J. Nordrum of St. Paul, and Mrs. O.B. Johnson of La Crosse. The body will be brought to La Crosse for burial. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

La Crosse Tribune, November 26, 1918:

Funeral services for Hans Nordrum will be at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. D. Johnson, 1613, Winnebago Street. Rev. O. H. Myhre will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Hans married Marie Amelia JOHNSON. Marie was born in Norway; died in Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Marie Amelia JOHNSON was born in Norway; died in Unknown.

    Notes:

She seems to have divorced Hans and married Henry Mack. In the 1900 census, Nellie is shown as “daughter” of Henry and Mary Mack. In the 1905 census she was a boarder. In the 1900 census, Mary is shown to have had one child, and to have been married for 13 years to Henry. However, Mary Mack is also shown to have come to the U.S. in 1886 which would seem to rule out her being the mother of Ella and Gustave. However, the ELCA church records confirm that she, as Marie Amelia Johnson, was the mother of Gustav and Nellie. Wisconsin Births and Christenings confirms that she was the mother of Ella.

In the 1901-1902 La Crosse city directory, Henry Mack “wks S&K Mfg Co” and resides at 1631 Winnebago.

Marie A Mack (1858-1936) and Henry Mack (1854-1932) are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse.
