Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Polk County, at which time he was already married. He was living in Star Prairie, Wisconsin at the time and said he was a streetcar conductor for the Twin City Street Car Co. in Minneapolis. He was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair. He was a farmer in Alden Twp, Polk County, Wisconsin, in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. In the 1940 census, he and his family lived in Amery in a rented residence (not a farm). Martin worked for the county doing road construction. He had an 8th grade education, his wife had had three years of high school. He made $1300 in 1939. All 8 children were living at home. In the 1950 census, he and his family lived in Balsam Lake. Martin worked for the county highway department doing road maintenance. The household consisted of Martin, 55, Gertrude, 50, Wayne, 18, Eugene Norman, 12, Berl Mabry, 21, and Berl’s wife (and Martin and Gertrude’s daughter) Fern, 21. Berl was a clerk in a grocery store, Fern was a stenographer for the county clerk.
