In the 1930 census, as Edwin F Smith, he and his wife Alta and their two children lived in Multnomah County, Oregon. Edwin was the proprietor of a restaurant. Both of his parents were born in Germany. In the 1940 census, he was Edwin F Smith, age 52. He and his family lived in South San Francisco in San Mateo County, California. He and “Alda” owned and ran a restaurant. Living with the family was the 85 year-old widow Marie K Smith, born in Germany. Her relationship to the family is not shown but she is probably Frank’s mother. The entire household had lived in that same house, which they rented, in 1935. He registered for the World War II draft in 1942 as Edwin Frank Smith. At that time, he and his wife lived at 601 3rd in Petaluma, Sonoma County, California. He was self-employed.
