    • Born in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø. Resided in Bøkkadn 33/3 av Ellingbø between 1850 and 1862. Came to the U.S. in 1862.

He may be the Anders Ellingboe who was a student at St. Olaf Academy for one year in 1875.

Land records show that the Benson land office issued Andrew T. Ellingboe a 120 acre homestead in Section 4 of Renville County on 15 Dec 1883. The land description is as follows:

      1 E½SE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W
      2 NWSE 5TH PM No 116 N 38 W

In the 1880 census, A. T. Ellingboe was a farmer in Wang Township, Renville County. A.T. was 27, his wife Betsey was 28, their daughter Betsey was 1 and their son Thrond was 2. They lived a few farms away from A. T.’s parents. (A. T. was also a census enumerator in Renville County for the 1880 census.)

In the 1885 state census they are in Wang Twp, Renville County. Their postal address is Sacred Heart.

In the 1900 census, Andrew, age 47 (born Aug 1852), was a farmer in Wang Township of Renville County. His family consisted of his wife Marit, age 38 (born Dec 1861), son Trond, 22 (Oct 1877), Kirsti, 19 (Feb 1881), Endre, 16 (June 1883), Ivar, 14 (June 1885), Anders, 12 (Sep 1887), Clara, 9 (July 1890), Esther, 2 (Mar 1898), and George 8/12 (Sep 1899). Andrew and Marit had been married for 3 years. She had borne 2 children, both still living. Andrew emigrated in 1862, Marit in 1866.

A 1900 land ownership map of Granite Falls Twp in Chippewa County shows A T Ellingboe owning an 80 parcel with A. F. Kattevold. The parcel is the eastern half of the southeast quarter of Section 12. Contiguous with this parcel is another parcel the two of them owned in Wang Twp, Renville County. That Renville County parcel, in the 1900 land ownership map of Wang Twp, was 30.6 acres in Section 7, adjacent to a 60 acre parcel owned by M. Ellingboe.

In a 1913 land ownership map of Wang Twp in Renville County, A T Ellingboe owns a continuous parcel of 276 acres in Sections 3, 4, and 9.

In the 1920 census, he is A. T. Ellingboe, 67, living with his wife Marit, 56, and grown children Esther B., George G., and Agnes M., in Wang Twp, Renville County. Living next door or, more probably, on the same farm, are households headed by sons Endre and the single Iver as well as his nephew Thrond.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

From “History of the Minnesota Valley,” published in 1882 for Renville County:

Ellingboe, A. T. A. T. Ellingboe was born in Norway, August 13, 1852, and when nine years old immigrated with the family to Goodhue county, Minnesota. He attended common school and St. Olaf’s College, Northfield. In 1874 he came to his present home in Wang; has been clerk since the organization of the town, justice since 1876, and postmaster of New Lisbon since June 1879. Betsey Leen became his wife December 16, 1876; Tom, Betsy, and Christina are their children.

From the History of Renville County:

“A triple wedding in which the hearts of six young people of Wang were made happy was one of the notable events of the early days. The ceremony was performed by that beloved pioneer preacher, the Rev. John Berg, in a schoolhouse located on the land of P. C. Brevig in Hawk Creek township. The contracting parties were A. T. Ellingboe and Betsy Lien, daughter of Anders Lien; Ole Erickson Drambroten and Anna Stende, the daughter of Anders Stende, and Gullick Helger- son Weflen and Martha Johnson Tandborg, daughter of Peter Tandborg.”

Also from the History of Renville County, also via the Dalby Database, published in 1916:

      A. T. Ellingboe was born in Norway, Aug. 13, 1852, and was brought to America in 1861 by his parents, Thrond I. and Kjirsti Kjirtsen, with his three brothers, Iver, Henry and Thron, and his four sisters, Veljer, Kjersti, Soneva and Berit, the voyage taking eleven weeks. The family came to Goodhue county, July 4, and made their home there. Here A. T. received his education at the common school and then spent one year at St. Olaf's College at Northfield, Minn. In 1873 he moved to Renville county, where he secured a homestead in section 4, Wang township, where he has lived ever since. Mr. Ellingboe has held many positions of public trust. In 1876 he was elected town clerk of Wang, which position he has held ever since. In 1877 he was elected justice of the peace, which office he also has held ever since. In 1878 he became clerk for School District No. 44. In 1880, 1890 and 1910 he was appointed enumerator of the census of Wang, Hawk Creek and Ericson toenships. In 1902 he was elected treasurer of the Hawk Creek Farmers' Mutual Insurance Co., and has held the office ever since. He was postmaster of New Lisbon for eighteen years. Mr. Ellingboe was married Dec. 16, 1876, to Berit E. Lien, daughter of Endre K. Lien and Berit (Gjevre) Lien, natives of Norway, who came from Norway in 1866. Nine children were born to this union, six of whom are living. Thron, born Oct. 6, 1877, died Sept. 18, 1913. Bertha, born April 10, 1879, married Gilbert Strand in 1914 and has one child, Bertha lola Marie. Christine, born Feb. 13, 1881, has been a teacher for ten years. Endre, born June 10, 1883, is a farmer in section 10. Wang township, and married to Gina Lofsgorden, June, 1912. Iver, born June 10, 1885, is a farmer in section 10, Wang township. Andris A., born Sept. 16, 1887, is a land owner in North Dakota. Clara, born July 16, 1890, is a teacher. Two children died in infancy. Mrs. Ellingboe died Aug. 26, 1895. Mr. Ellingboe was married a second time to Marit G. Gjevre, Aug. 1, 1897. She was a cousin of his first wife, and daughter of Gunder and Gro (Helgeson) {rjevre, natives of Norway, who came to America on the same ship as the parents of his first wife. Three children were born by this marriage: Esther, born in 1898, a student at Madison, Minn.; George, born Sept. 25, 1899, at home on the farm, and Agues, born Sept. 3, 1901, student at Maynard public schools, Maynard, Minn.

From Valdres Pioneer Tales from "Budstikken," May 1971 page 12:

It is a hundred years since the Valdres people first invaded what was to become Wang Township, Renville county Minnesota in a mass. Other settlers had come earlier: Christian O. Narvestad, Hans Grotvedt, and Theodore Rongerud, three brothers; together with Hans Gunderson and Christian Engebretson had come in June, 1867.

The first Valdreses apparently were Thomas Christofferson Lerhol and Anders Thomason Kjersten who came from Vang, Valdres in 1868. But it was not until 1871 that the great migration started and it continued until they filled the whole countryside. Among the early Valdreser were Andrew E. Rogen, Ole Halvorson Holien (Skalberg), George Halvorson Holien (Skalberg), Peter Iverson, Endre' K. Holien, Iver Oie, Iver Nystuen, Helge Evanson (Holien), H. Ellingboe, Andrew T. Ellingboe, Tosten Olson Hamre, Siver Guttormson Strand, Ole O. Strand, Ove Strand, H. H. Weflen, Ingebret Thompson, George C. Heen, Christopher Gulbrandson Heen, Mrs. Mary Ostrem Boe, Ole Thompson Grover, Gullik Weflen, Trond I. Ellingboe, Erick Erickson Viken, Trond Engebretson, Engebret Engebretson, Knute Weflen, Hans O. Berg, Ole Christopherson Soine, Ole O. Belsem, Knud Knudson Viken, Gunder O. Gjevre, Ole O. Grov, Thomas K. Weflen, Evert M. Strand, the Loes, Thorkelsons and others.

The township was organized on July 28, 1875 and the first election was held at the home of Elling Johnson. Elling was elected chairman; Ole C. Soine and O. T. Grover, supervisors; Nils Norman was elected clerk but did not qualify so A. T. Ellingboe was appointed to the post which he held for half a century. At the first regular election C. A. Evenson was elected chairman; Erick Viken and O. T. Grover, supervisor; A. T. Ellingboe, clerk, Elling Johnson, assessor; P. L. Brevig, treasurer; K. K. Viken, justice of the peace; and O. K. Williams, constable.

The township was named Wang in honor of Vang, Valdres, as is also the local church, which recently celebrated its 85th anniversary.

Throughout the century the Valdres have been in a majority in the township and continue to be so today. Not only are the Loes, Soines, Ellingboes, Haugens, Lerohls, Strands. etc.. Valdres but many names like Dembroten, Narvestad, etc. represent half-breed Veldreses.

These pioneers came with oxen and covered wagons shortly after the Indian uprisings were over. They still had to fight mosquitos, grasshoppers, prairie fires, droughts, and blizzards. Throughout the century the Valdres have been in the majority in township offices and continue to be so today.

The Wang Township section of the History of Renville County says Andrew T. Ellingboe and Ole O. Belsem (#16300) “came together with the caravan, Ellingboe furnishing a yoke of oxen and Belsem the wagon.”
