  Notes	His birth location is sometimes given as France, sometimes as Michigan. The best guess is that he was born in England. The 1881 Wales census finds him as William H P, age 11, living with his parents, George and Mary, ages 35 and 37, respectively, in Cardiff, Wales. William’s and Mary’s birth places are shown as Malland in Devon. George is a fireman on a steam ship. His middle initials are variously given as H, HP, and M. In the registration for his marriage to Evelyn Vargason, for which the date is 2 Dec 1898 and the location is Independence in Buchanan County, Iowa, he is called William M Large and his parents are George Large and Mary Jones. His obituary ascribes the cause of his death to a failed appendicitis operation. However, the obit also notes that he had suffered a work-related injury three weeks earlier, “since which time he had been in poor health.”
