    Notes
    • In the 1900 U.S. census, he may be the “Edw. H” Garrett who lived in Kansas City, Missouri, with his new wife Grace. They had been married 18 Apr 1900 in Kansas City, Kansas. The record for that marriage shows him as Edward Garratt, age 21, her as Grace Skillen, age 22, born in Kansas City, Missouri. The date of birth in the 1900 census for “Edw.” is Oct 1876 in French Canada. He was a bookkeeper. In the 1910 census, that Grace Garrett was a 33 year-old “widow” living in Los Angeles as a department store saleswoman. She had had one child, still living.

      ------------------

In the 1905 state census, Edwin and Eda live in Fairfield Twp, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. Edwin, a farmer, is 34 -- which would put his year of birth at 1871 -- and Eda is 18. Edwin appears to have been born in Wisconsin (both of his parents were born in Ireland) although the birth location is not legible on the form. He has been in Minnesota for five-and-a-half years. He and Eda have lived in Fairfield Twp for 1 year and 8 months.

Shown as age 29 and born in Canada on his son Edwin’s 1905 birth certificate which would put the senior Edwin’s year of birth at 1876.

A note in the 30 Mar 1909 edition of the Brainerd Daily Dispatch has “Edwin Garrett and wife” selling property to Helen H. Hense. The property in question was “nw se and e1/2 sw, 19-137-25” for $500. This was a 120 acre parcel, about 70 acres of which are in Rogers Lake with only maybe 50 acres of dry land, in Section 19 of the Ross Lake Twp, Crow Wing County. In the 1913 plat book, the property was still owned by Helen Hense.

      -------------------

Edna believes that Edwin F Wendt’s father is the Edwin Garrett who was naturalized as a U.S. citizen on August 29, 1931, in Spokane, Washington. He lived at 15 W. Indiana Avenue. His certificate of citizenship is 3515511. The following assumes that that is true.

In the 1910 census, a 45 year-old Edward Garrith lived in Portland, Oregon. He was single and worked as a logger. He had come to the U.S. in 1876.

In the 1916 Canadian census, the 52 year-old Edwin Garrett was a lodger, living next door to his brother William, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. At that time he was single, claimed Canadian citizenship, was a farmer, and claimed to be of Irish stock and of the Anglican religion.

In the 1928 Spokane city directory, Edwin Garrett and Mary E live at W 15 Indiana. No occupation.

In the 1930 census, he is shown as 67 years old, born in Canada. He and his wife live at 15 Indiana. Edwin is the manager of a tourist camp. He emigrated from Canada to the U.S. in 1875 and was first married at the age of 16.

In the 1931 Spokane directory, he and Elizabeth live at W 15 Indiana.

In the 1932 Spokane directory, he and Mary E live at W15 Indiana Avenue. He is a logger.

In the 1933 Spokane directory, he is a cook. He and Mary E live at W15 Indiana.

In the business section of the 1934 Spokane directory, he is listed as a fuel dealer - retail. In the residential section of that directory, he is listed as employed in the sale of wood.

In the 1936 Spokane city directory, he and Elizabeth live at W15 Indiana Avenue. Edwin is employed as a dealer in second-hand goods with his place of business as E130 Indiana. The business section of the directory also shows him as a dealer of second-hand goods at E130 Indiana.

In the 1938 Spokane directory, he is Edwin E Garrett, living with Elizabeth at W15 Indiana.

In the 1939 Spokane directory he is Edwin E Garrett and lives with Mary E at W15 Indiana.

In the 1940 census, he and Elizabeth still live in Spokane. Edwin is 76 years old and was born in French Canada. His wife is 60 years old and was born in English Canada. She has an eighth-grade education and he has a second-grade education. Edwin owns the house they live in at 130 Indiana, worth $1000. They have seven renters living with them. Only a couple of the renters have an occupation.

In the 1940 Spokane directory, he is Edwin E and lives with “M Eliz” at W15 Indiana.

In the 1941 Spokane directory, he and “M Eliz” live at 128 Indiana Avenue.

In the 1949 Spokane directory, Mary E Garrett of N6015½ is shown as the widow of Edwin.

“Edward” Garrett, husband of Mary Elizabeth Garrett, died in Spangle in Spokane County, Washington, on 29 Oct 1941 at the reported age of 76 which would put his year of birth at about 1865. According to state death records, that Edward Garrett was the son of William Garrett and Angelic Hommo.

In the 1871 Canadian census, A William Garrett, 50, Angelique, 42, and their family lived in the Cox division or precinct of Bonaventure in Quebec. The family included Edmond, age 8, but not a son William. The senior William’s occupation was “cultivateur.”

In the 1891 Canadian census, a William Garrett, 65, Angelique, 64, and their family lived in Bonaventure, Hamilton East, Quebec.

An Ancestry family tree says this family is William Garrett Sr., b. 18 Nov 1823, d. 30 Jun 1906 (both events in New Carlisle, Bonaventure Co., Quebec) and Angelique Imhoff, b. 17 Apr 1828 in Port Daniel, Bonaventure County, Quebec, d. 1 Jul 1899 in New Carlisle. That tree claims that William and Angelique had a son Edmond, b. 24 Apr 1864 in New Carlisle.

The hand-written birth record, entered into the church book of the Church of England church in New Carlisle, is for “Edmund, son of William Garret of Cox Township, farmer, and Angelique Imhoff, his wife, born on the twenty-fourth day of April, was baptized on the twenty-fourth day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & sixty-four.”

An Edmund Garrett, age 57, arrived in Marcus, Washington, via the Great Northern Railroad, on 16 Feb 1922, accompanied by his wife. He had been born in New Carlisle and was a farmer. He had a brother William in Pennant, Saskatchewan, which was also Edmund’s last permanent address. Edmund claimed to have been in the U.S., in Minnesota, from 1911 to June of 1911. He was described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and had a medium “complexion” with brown hair and brown eyes.

As Edwin Garrett, he visited his brother William in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, twice more in 1922.
