    Notes
    • In the 1875 Norwegian census, he was living with the rest of the family at Storøren gård #265, Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.

Emigrated in 1886 or 1887. He is probably the Johannes Bye, 20, arriving in New York on May 28, 1886, aboard the S.S. Hekla which had sailed from Copenhagen. Traveling with him, apparently, because they all were identified as from the same Bÿnaaret farm, was 20 year-old Ole Bye, 26 year-old Erik Onsoÿen, 29 year-old John Johnsen, and 20 year-old Martin Bye. Johannes apparently did not emigrate from Trondheim.

Living at 305 Channing Avenue in Fergus Falls, in a house that he owns without mortgage, at the time of the 1900 census. Shown as Johannes Bye, 33 (born in Norway June 1866), with wife Anna, 41 (born in Norway January 1859), and son Eivind G., 2 (born in Minnesota October 1897). Johannes and Anna had been married for 7 years and she had had one child, still living. Anna emigrated in 1889. Johannes’s occupation is millhand at a flour mill.

In the 1902 Fergus Falls city directory, he was John M Bye. He lived with his wife Annie at 305 Channing and he worked as a miller for the F Flour Mills Co.

In the 1903 and 1905 and 1907 Fergus Falls city directories, he was John E Bye, an employee of the F Flour Mills Co. He and Annie lived at 305 Channing Avenue W.

As Johs. E. Bye, he was one of the charter members of Trønderlag of America in 1908. This was (and still is) the bygdelag for emigrants and their descendants from the Trøndelag region of Norway. John E. Bye, of Fergus Falls and from Vårdalen, was listed in the Trønderlaget’s 1910 yearbook. In that yearbook, John E. is shown as having emigrated to the U.S. in 1886.

In the 1909 Fergus Falls city directory, he and Annie still live at 305 Channing Avenue W. He is still a miller with the F Flour Mills Co.

In the 1910 census, John E. Bye, 43, and Annie, 51, were living at 303 Channing Avenue in Fergus Falls. They had been married for 18 years and had one child, Eivind G., 12. John came to this country in 1887 and his wife in 1889. John is a miller at a flour mill.

In the 1911 city directory, he and Annie still live at 305 Channing and he is still a miller with F Flour Mills Co.

A Johannes Bye owned a 40 acre parcel in the northeast corner of Section 3 of Scambler Twp, Otter Tail County, in a 1912 land ownership map.

In the 1920 census, John E. Bye, 44, was living at 816 Court Street in Fergus Falls. Living with him is his wife, Annie, 61, and son Eivind, 22. John came to his country in 1887 and was naturalized in 1901. Annie came to this country in 1889. John E. is a miller at a flour mill. Eivind is a mail carrier for the U. S. Post Office.

Living in Fergus Falls at the time of Martin Bye’s death. Went by the name of John E.

Shown as John E. Bye in the 1930 census. At that time, he, 64, and Anna, 71, were living at 816 Court Street in Fergus Falls. They were first married when he was 26 and she was 31. John E. came to this country in 1886 and Anna in 1889.

Inthe 1931 city directory, he and Anne live at 816 Court. He has no occupation.

In the 1935/36 Fergus Falls city directory, he (as “Jno. E.”) and “Annie” live at 816 Court S. In the 1939/40 Fergus Falls city directory, their telephone number is 292J.

In the 1940 census, John and Anne Bye live at 816 Court Street in a house they own worth $3000. They each have an eighth-grade education.

Of the house at 816 Court, Diane says that “Grandpa built a rock garden in his back yard that was very impressive. He had a waterfall and fish pond, too. None of it is left except four foot-high stone bases he had flowers on.” The house was in very good shape at the time of the 2008 Trønderlag. Diane says that it was in “sad shape” in 2000.

Johannes retired in October of 1921. His obit:

Johannes Bye, respected and well-known pioneer of this city, died at his home, 816 Court Street, at 11:10 AM after a lingering illness.

He came to this city in June 1, 1886. He has made his home here ever since. He was employed in the old Cable Mill and the Otter Tail Mill for 35 years. He was married in Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Deceased was a man of fine character and had a great many friends among the pioneers of the city. Surviving are the wife and one son, Eivind Bye, the well-known mail carrier. There are two grandchildren, Eivind Bye, Jr., and Diane Bye.

      Johannes died of bowel cancer.
