  Notes	A Lorell L. Sorensen was a contributor to the South Dakota State University’s College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences in the period Jan 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004. “June 23, 1955. Lorell Sorensen, manager of the Flandreau Co-op Creamery said 4,800 servings of ice cream were distributed at the annual Creamery Picnic held Thursday, June 16, in the city park.” Regarding an exhibit in the late 1990s at the Weeks Library at the University of South Dakota: “African Art The works on display are from a collection developed from gifts by Daisy and Duke Marks of New York City and Lorell Sorensen of Flandreau, South Dakota. The Marks are life-long collectors of African art and benefactors of many notable institutions including the metropolitan Museum of Art and the Fogg Museum at Harvard. Their principle interest has been in collecting works of large-scale sculpture. Mr. Lorell Sorensen's collecting history came from a very different context representing artifacts he assembled while serving as a U.S government agricultural consultant to the country of Togo. His materials represent an interest in daily African life. Together, these collections offer us insight into a broad range of African objects that share a common bond in materials, processes, and style. It is the intent of this display to introduce viewers to African culture via some dynamic tangible expressions of its belief and practices.” Lorell L. Sorenson — Brookings July 19, 1921 -Feb. 14, 2005 Lorell L. Sorenson, 83, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Burial is in the Colman Cemetery. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. Masonic service at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau. He was born July 19, 1921, in Colman to Agnes (Holm) and Elmer Sorenson. He attended country schools and graduated from Colman High School in 1938. He joined the Navy and was in the Pacific during World War II. He married Joyce Clements of Philadelphia on March 2, 1944. After his discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to South Dakota where he enrolled at SDSC (SDSU) and earned a bachelor of science degree in agriculture education in 1947. He taught vocational agriculture in Chester and Flandreau High Schools. From 1953 to 1964, he managed the Co-op Creamery in Flandreau and then went to Togo, West Africa, for two years as an agricultural consultant for Near East Foundation/US AID. After returning to the United States he was director of the ASCS office in Flandreau. His wife died on March 9, 1977. He married Marge Heinsohn at Scotland on Feb. 20, 1978. He retired in 1983, but unable to sit still, he was in the used car business with Jerry Weets for several years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Flandreau Masonic Lodge No. 11 AF & AM, NARFE, Kiwanis and the Flandreau Chamber of Commerce. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a man of wonderful humor, an outstanding encourager and loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Marge; five children, Maxine Sorenson (George) Bergh of Mendota Heights, Minn., Shirley (Dick) Suedkamp of Denver, Lori (Dean) Jones of Tea, John Jay (Pat) Sorenson of Texas and William (Sharon) Heinsohn of Jackson, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; a brother, Donald Sorenson and a sister-in-law, Bette. Not listed in the SSDI.
